“Lots of space in good location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2012

The House of MG is a lovely space, well located to the Old City and attractions. Our room was huge, with a considerable bathroom and large separate living area with a swing seat and comfortable chairs.

There is a pool, which looks as if it'd be lovely with beautiful tiling, but it was under renovation when we were there so we were unable to enjoy it. The 'gym' has a single treadmill. Next door is an associated restaurant which has acceptable food.

Upstairs is a wonderful restaurant, the 'Agashiye (which, appropriately, means on the terrace)', where you can have an authentic Gujarati meal on the rooftop, with good views, excellent service and delicious Gujarati food, which is eaten with your hands (not cutlery).

Only stayed 1 night, but a fantastic place to stay. The room was very large and we had a fantastic verandah where you could sit and relax in the swing seat. staff good and again free wifi. We ate in the upstairs restaurant where they only serve thali. It was an exellent meal but served in a different way to others we have had. I think the staff should ask you if you would like it explaing as you enter, we were given a leaflet to how it worked but not untill later.

Hotel in central location, the front rooms are very noisy. Spacious rooms with furniture well kept. Bathroom spacious and clean, shower with lukewarm water only. The restaurant in the courtyard is fast and simple but the dishes are very spicy. Western breakfast is essential, improvable. Good organization of the reception.

So many things go to making a good hotel. But what makes a great place, will always be a combination of great staff and san attendance to detail that is driven by the desire to be hospitable: to delight guests by anticipating and surpassing their needs.

We arrived after staying in quite rough surroundings, so the comfort of the MG was quite stunning. We were introduced by the kind and thoughtful staff to our unbelievably nice suite: spacious, immaculately clean with a delicious bed and fabulous bathroom. A typical detail: the choice of videos in the DVD library was brilliant.. Food in the downstairs coffee bar was delicious and innovative, but the food on the roof terrace was probably they best we've had in India in several visits. exquisitely well prepared and served.

The hotel is in a great location, too: within walking distance of the Old City, and within walking distance of the one hotel where you can acquire a licence to buy alcohol. (If you are coming into Ahmedebad by plane, you can get this licence at the airport at the tourist office. I'd recommend that you do that.

It's not cheap. But it's really worth economising to stay here. It is absolutely splendid.

BTW I simply do not understand the criticism voiced elsewhere on Tripadvisor: this was not our experience or that of other people we spoke to. This is a place to savour and to return to.

Bang in the middle of old town, this is an model small hotel that does not behave like one. Easy to book on the net with some sweet last minute deals, ultra fair airport drop charges (pick up was complimentary) are the small treats. The big one is the surprise after you enter the property. The best part about this property, beyond the beauty, is the overall home-like experience. The rooms are well appointed and each one is different, their staff while being highly efficient are easy and pleasant. Their all vegetarian Indian menu is authentic and their gujarathi cooking is top class and can seldom be found outside Gujarathi homes. Ahmedabad has a treasure of architecture, havelis, wells and museums, most require some bit of research and asking around. The Calico museum of textiles is world-class, requires advance booking and is not to be missed. There is one draw back with the property; depending on the room you are in, the noise from the streets can get to you- traffic noise during the day and dog barks/residents in the neighborhood during the night. Those who after pin-drop silence beware!

This is a wonderful hotel. Every room is full of surprises, both old and new. The restoration of this property is very good, and in addition to lovely old furniture, there are superb touches of innovation, such as bright bangles hanging on fluorescent lights on the stair cases. The bathrooms and showers are very spacious, with lots of fluffy towels, towel robes and loads of hot water. Located as the hotel is in central Ahmedabad, it provides a welcome oasis when the traffic and hustle and bustle of lively Ahmedadabad becomes too much. The Green room restaurant on the ground floor is excellent too, but we were not so impressed with the formality of the rooftop restaurant. The hotel staff are wonderful, especially the reception staff and the porters and drivers. The hotel organises some great city tours - don't miss the nighttime tour of Ahmedabad and the tour of Le Corbusier buildings in the city. Our only concern was that the hotel shop was never open and the shopkeeper was very unfriendly indeed - we complained to the hotel about this before we left, but have not received a reply to our concerns a week after leaving the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 and 2 were lovely

Dear Madam
Thank you for taking the time to write a positive review about your stay at the House of MG. We are very glad that your experience with us. I regret the delay in responding to your complaint regarding your the retail shop. On investigation we found that the shop was getting fitted with a new air-conditioning unit on the day that you were there and it remained closed for a day-and-a-half. The sales person said that he requested you to come later when it was partially open but not quite ready for business (he mentioned that there were also some other guests browsing in the shop). Perhaps you found his attitude unfriendly and we sincerely apologise for that. Our shop normally remains open between 10 AM and 10PM.

We look forward to welcoming you again at The House of MG in the near future.

Sincerely,
Jignesh Patel
