My husband and I stayed with Hari at his lovely yoga retreat home stay in Varkala. With only 4 guest rooms you get to know the other guests and it feels like a home away from home. Hari is a lovely person who is very accommodating and helpful. He teaches Sivanada yoga twice daily and meditation (on request). Yoga mats are provided. His classes are very relaxing and he caters to the level of the practitioner and is very knowledgeable. Hari is very personable, easy to talk to, and helped arrange spas, cooking classes and transportation. The grounds of the retreat area are carefully manicured and tended to, which creates a quiet, relaxing, and natural environment. Breakfast with tea and lunch/dinner were provided every day. All the food was vegetarian and very healthy and yummy.
The rooms were spacious with a cupboard to put away your clothes and a mosquito net. I ended up buying a sarong on the cliff to supplement the sparse bed sheet provided. You also need to supply your own soaps, shampoos and toilet paper as you see necessary. The showers do not have hot water but with the climate being as hot as it is, it is not really necessary. The basic accommodations lend themselves nicely to the simplicity of life in Varkala and reminds us that we don't really need everything that we have made ourselves accustomed to.
Sharnagati Yogahaus is located on the north end of the North Cliff, just behind the cliff. It took about 10 minutes to walk to the beach and less than 5 minutes to the black sand beach.
We highly recommend it for people who want to do a yoga vacation without the strictness of an ashram or yoga retreat.
