“Relaxing Yoga Homestay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 January 2012

My husband and I stayed with Hari at his lovely yoga retreat home stay in Varkala. With only 4 guest rooms you get to know the other guests and it feels like a home away from home. Hari is a lovely person who is very accommodating and helpful. He teaches Sivanada yoga twice daily and meditation (on request). Yoga mats are provided. His classes are very relaxing and he caters to the level of the practitioner and is very knowledgeable. Hari is very personable, easy to talk to, and helped arrange spas, cooking classes and transportation. The grounds of the retreat area are carefully manicured and tended to, which creates a quiet, relaxing, and natural environment. Breakfast with tea and lunch/dinner were provided every day. All the food was vegetarian and very healthy and yummy.
The rooms were spacious with a cupboard to put away your clothes and a mosquito net. I ended up buying a sarong on the cliff to supplement the sparse bed sheet provided. You also need to supply your own soaps, shampoos and toilet paper as you see necessary. The showers do not have hot water but with the climate being as hot as it is, it is not really necessary. The basic accommodations lend themselves nicely to the simplicity of life in Varkala and reminds us that we don't really need everything that we have made ourselves accustomed to.
Sharnagati Yogahaus is located on the north end of the North Cliff, just behind the cliff. It took about 10 minutes to walk to the beach and less than 5 minutes to the black sand beach.
We highly recommend it for people who want to do a yoga vacation without the strictness of an ashram or yoga retreat.

We had a great stay at the Sharanagati in January.
We were welcomed by the lovely Hari, who is welcoming, friendly, and very funny.
Our room was very clean and bright and the food was delicious.
The house is located very near to the beach and the strip.
It was a great place for my partner to get a taste of yoga for the first time, which has triggered an interest in taking it up on a regular basis.
Thank you Hari, hopefully we will come back soon!

I booked to stay 6 nights with Hari and then planed to go to Kovalam. I hadnt done yoga for nearly a year but wanted some sort of structure to my day. Hari's excellent teaching skills and kindness helped me re-appreciate yoga and meditation. The location was ideal, close enough to the North Cliff if that is where you want to be but also very quiet. The gardens are lovely and continually evolving and you can lay in a hammock and watch eagles and hawks overhead. There is a small shop 30 seconds nearby if you need anything and also some rickshaws.

I actually altered my trip and came back to stay here after a few days in Kovalam, Hari was very gracious and made this possible for me as he rightly detected it was where I needed to be, at one stage I even had his room as the house was fully booked! The food was excellent, a nice breakfast of porridge and fruit and then a selection of vegetable curries and rice for lunch, there was always more than enough food and normally leftovers in the evening if you wanted them.

The teaching was very good, Hari would always ask peoples history or practice and then observe them to start with and offer advice and suggestions if needed. There is the choice to do a meditation practice before morning class which I I did too and it was lovely to sit outside and meditate. Hari was very knoweldgable about meditation and would answer any questions that people had.
I would recommend Sheranagati Yogahaus to both experienced yogi's and newcomers alike. I will definately be returning!

We spent ten days at Sharanagati in the beginning of November as a start to two months in India. It was absolutely lovely! The house lies in a beautiful garden where you can sit in a chair or lie in a hammock and just BE!

The yogaclasses are so great. Even now almost two months after the yogavacation we still practice several times every week even though we still travel. You feel great inside and out. Hari has a way to teach that make you feel good enough no matter what your form and experience. He doesn´t give much corrections to your posture, but more important to your breathing and your mind, which is even harder and most important!

It´s very simple accommodation, clean and spacious rooms. You have to let Hari know if you need anything like a change of sheets or a different type of breakfast and he will fix it for you. The food is simple and vegetarian, not so spicy, and suits it´s purpose as Yogafood :)
It´s very easy to relax in this place and we really felt like brand new people after a few days.

Hari has so much to teach you if you are willing and open, he is a great teacher and he gives so much! I would love to come back someday to this home away from home.

Sharanagati Yogahaus

People come here for the yoga and Hari is an accomplished instructor.  Having lived 3 years in an ashram, he provides an authentic, fully rounded yoga experience, effortlessly combining the physical exercise with meditation and spirituality.  All this with small group instruction and without the rigidity of the ashram environment.  Guests are invited to two yoga sessions daily at an outdoor yoga pavilion floored with packed red river sand and covered by a thatched roof.  Yoga mats are provided.

The homestay and pavilion are located on a lush couple of acres with banana, papaya and coconut trees.  It's a short 2 minute walk to the bustle of the Varkala cliff scene.

Sharanagati  has a nice vibe to it.  The refrigerator is always stocked with fresh fruit and  leftovers, and Hari has an open kitchen policy.  Guests are free to use the gardens, swing in one of the 3 hammocks, or engage in one of the impromptu discussions that seem to spring up regularly. There is a small common room but the convening of guests and sharing of tales tends to take place at a smaller outside thatched pavilion, where meals are served.

Our room was on  the smallish side, compared to other places we stayed in India, but was    entirely adequate.  A mosquito net was provided, but we did not feel the need for it in early December.  If you are a tall person the beds might be a challenge as my  husband's 6' frame just fit.

Breakfasts were simple, fresh fruit salad, oatmeal and chai.  Lunch tended to be a vegetarian thalis made up of about 5 dishes and Hari was auditioning a new cook while we were there.  Some of the dishes really stood out,  including a beet root torren which was delicious.

We considered the homestay to be an excellent value when one considers that our 3,000 rupee room gave us yoga instruction twice daily, a light breakfast and a substantial lunch.

We are so greatful to have met Hari! We stayed for 10 days and wished we booked for longer time in advance! After the 10 days we still are coming for at least one yogaclass a day. Hari is in our hearts and will be there forever.

Hari shares so much wisdom and you feel so taken care of. Hari has lived 3 years at Sivananda ashram and 1 year in a buddhist monastery and he is so skillful.

The yoga classes are always focusing on breath awareness and it´s beautiful to practice with him and in the yogashala.

Sharanagati is an oasis of tranquility and spirituality. If you are searching for your path or if you are already on it, this is a good place to be!

We wish we could give Sharanagati and Hari more stars, but since we can't we will just give our warmest heartfelt recommendations, knowing that we will be back again.

Love and light always,
Ganesh yoga ( Anjali and Surya)

Didn't attend the classes because I was ill. Found Hari the owner a bit difficult actually (and he loved talking about himself). The food was so so. The rooms were clean. Would have been nice to at least had a bar of soap in the bathrooms , toilet roll and a towel.
