“Pure Disney, but so are all”
Reviewed 17 February 2012

Our first thought on arriving at the hotel was that it was pure Disney: a pastiche of an old palace built on a fresh site out of town. That was before we went visiting and realised that all the new hotels were the same. It's a pity that no architect has managed to blend the old with the new.

The hotel is large and spacious with good sized rooms. There is no lift but plenty of ground floor rooms. The rooms are very clean and well maintained, with tea and coffee making facilities. The selection of teas was good but the instant coffee pretty dire. We always take a pot of instant in our suitcase.

In the bathroom, there was no plug in either the wash basin or bath and there were no signs of there ever having been installed. Hoe a gentleman is supposed to shave or a lady wash her smalls without a plug is a mystery to me.

It took quite some effort to get them. It was partly language; in anglo-indian a bath plug is a 'stopper' and partly proceedure: someone has to come and see if there is a bath stopper and then someone else brings one. It was the same proceedure with bath robes.

We dined in the hotel one evening. The (Indian) food was good and service cheerful and smiling.
There was a buffet breakfast with a good selection of both Indian and European choices. The service was Indian but overall a good hotel.

This place is like a real "rajwada"! We were impressed by its imposing exteriors even before we entered the hotel. The room we got was spacious and very well decorated. There was covered parking for our car too. The interiors of the hotel- its lobbies, reception, lawns etc., offer 'sight seeing' of their own. The reception staff was very efficient and helpful in helping us with the desert safari and local attractions. The Rajasthani cuisine that the restaurant offered was memorable and I would strongly recommend their 'Lal Maas' to all you meat lovers.

And to top it all, you don't pay a ransom for all this.

We were upgraded to a very nice suite, quite large. The hotel is a new place and has an appealing design but I was quite disappointed in my meal last night. We got some stuff off the buffet but I didn’t like the food. My terrific wife and companion managed it but the waiter took mine away and brought me a paneer dish that was much better.

We tested out the pool and found it to be very cool and refreshing. We dried off in the hot dry air in minutes.

Our last morning required a very early start and so we arranged, or attempted to arrange, a box breakfast to take with us. The day before, we had to ask the desk about three or four times and each time they said to come back later to request the box. Finally we got the order placed and all seemed well. Of course the next morning there was no breakfast, very annoying. So all considered the service was no so good, the waiter in the dinning room was accommodating but this early breakfast was a failure.

The internet is charged by the time you actually use the service, so that is good, however, the internet was dead slow or non existent most of our time here.

We booked a Suite, so got a very large living area, and equally large bedroom, there were two well fitted bathrooms. The rooms were nice. The hotel lobby is well laid out, the exteriors are fabulous. We were in a large group, and I saw the double rooms, those were average. The food in the restaurant - breakfast/lunch/room service - all are average, but then there are not very good options in Jaisalmer for eating out in any case.

The service and responsivness is very good. They turn off the hot water from 11 AM to 4 PM, which can be a challange sometimes, but they did turn it on when we requested.

Good location, not far from the Jaisalmer fort, lake, Hevali's and shopping areas.

They had offered us a 3 night package, with one night in a Desert camp. The tents in the camp, food, folk dance performance was all below average. So I would recomend selecting your camp directly and not taking their package.

Room Tip: Take the suite, its much better

Fort Rajwada is ideal for Families stay The hotel is not a heritage property ,but is made as one, with beautiful Jharokas and well laid out gardens The pool is very nice. The evening cultural program is of a good standard. We were in a group so had booked a Suite and a Delux room The Suite is very spacious with big bay windows overlooking the garden and a view of the Golden Fort The Delux room us also large and comfortable
Service and food are good. The Interner server was down when we were there so there was no wi fi,which is surprising,it did not get fixed in even 3 days Also the bathrooms do not have hygiene faucets ,which is surprising
The hotel is abt 5 km from the fort....one needs a vehicle /Taxi Its not for those who want a genuine Fort living experience. For that Mandir Palace of Welcomheritage is more suitable The Jaiselme fort is indeed beyond magnificent,it is a 1000 year old living fort and one can stay a month in same and still be fascinated Where else in the world do you have a Govt legalised cannabis cafe at the entrance, selling milk shakes, cakes, coffee, cigarettes all with the weed..

First impressions on entering Fort Rajwada will not fail to impress you.

This is constructed like a fort but is not a heritage property and is well maintained. The swimming pool is very inviting and the whole property is well laid-out. The rooms are reasonably spacious and well equipped - at the price we paid it was worth the money if we keep service and food out of the equation.

My second criteria for any resort is the quality of the food and on this score... the Rajwada scored very poorly. The service at the restaurant is excellent but the food seems to have been prepared by somebody whose profession is definitely not that of a chef. I suspect one reason for the atrocious taste could be that the chef was being adventurous by including non-rajasthani items on the menu eg: poha, idli et et on breakfast menu. Also, the menu attempts to strike a balance between items preferred by foreigners and those by indians and ends up pleasing no-one.

Finally, service has a 'take-it or leave-it' approach in the resort... and some transfer of expertise from the restaurant [where service is good] to the rest of the resort will definitely help. Beyond the elaborate uniforms, staff needs to be tuned into a service culture which is missing. It will help avoid silly issues like "sorry sir, we provide bath-slippers only in our suites ..." when the floor is ice-cold, carpets are patchy and a room-slippers are absolutely a must.

Overall, I would recommend the property as you can always eat-out and if you are out of the room most of the time, then service issues dont affect you a lot.

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying in this hotel during our visit to Jaisalmer last November. The hotel is very majestic and beautiful built with local golden lime stone. The people at the hotel are also very nice and very friendly and would go out of the way to make us comfortable. I would surely love to comeback and stay at this hotel once again.
