“Best Hotel we found in India”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 February 2012

We just spent two weeks in India and stayed at several excellent hotels; Taj Palace in Mumbai, Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur, Samode Palace outside Jaipur. But the best was Devi Garh. It was an amazing experience with a fantastic and comfortable suite, discrete but excellent service and a first class restaurant. What is most surprising is the way in which the suites have been incorporated in the palace without making one feel that it was a hotel. As we wandered around, we kept discovering the nooks and crannies of the palace and forgot that it was a hotel.
Our only complaint is that we should have stayed there for two nights to really enjoy the hotel and its surroundings - can't blame that on the Devi Garh! Se my wife's blog - gallivantingisadora.blogspot.com for more!

Devi Garh is my favorite hotel in the world: the dream location in a desert village; the stunning architecture of the original fort and its impeccable renovation; the amazing service - they all combine to make Devi Garh just the perfect escape to relax in style.

My husband and I have stayed at Devi Garh twice: first in 2005, and again in 2012. If anything, what was already outstanding at all levels got even better.

Service: Absolutely world-class at all levels (restaurant, bar, reception, pool-side, house-keeping). The staff not only met all, but also anticipated several of our needs and took action: a glass of lemonade arriving unexpectedly by the pool when you think you're getting a bit thirsty, or a cup of tea and a shawl when the sun gets down and the temperature drops as you are reading a book on a daybed at the bar. We've encountered this level of service at only one or two other hotels in our travels.

Hotel facilities: Simply wonderful! The design, the architecture, the multiple communal places, the pool, the beautiful hidden nooks in which one can sit, read, or even take a nap – all fantastic. The wall of Rajasthani paintings exquisitely framed in the suite we stayed in is gorgeous. Most suites also have a view of the surrounding mountains and village life.

Restaurant: Absolutely delicious food. The restaurant has an extensive menu ranging from traditional and modern Indian to Rajasthani delicacies to continental food. There's plenty of choice but if you want something off the menu, you just need to ask. We also enjoyed two wonderful private dinners in beautiful settings.

Bar: The verandah at the bar is now one of our favorite places in the world to watch sunsets. The music selection is fantastic. The wine selection is good. The munchies sophisticated and delicious. The "Devi Garh Therapy" drink is just what the doctor prescribed for complete happiness.

Spa: The staff is well trained and professional. We enjoyed two great treatments. Being a bit of massage snobs, we were happily surprised at the level of energy our therapists put into it.

Environment: One of the absolutely fantastic things about Devi Garh is the lack of pollution (sound, light, and air). The village just outside the gates is very picturesque and full of charm. If you're feeling adventurous, you can borrow mountain bikes from the hotel and explore a bit farther - or have the hotel arrange for a camel ride.

Room Tip: Any suite in the main building (not the garden suites) will be lovely.

We stayed 3 nights at Devi Garh for christmas. The hotel was something that I have never stayed at before. A nice old palace hotel with lots of history. The rooms were big and clean! I loved tha marble bathtub that was also filled up woth hot water and roses on the first evening.

The staff was very nice and helpfull. The christmas evening was very well arranged with good food, entertainment and a very good DJ (thanks for playing Avicii- Levels as the intro song)!!

One thing that was noticed (not only Devi Garh) was that the staff was kind of "competing" against each other over the guests. That might be caused by the recommendation of one certain staffmember that the guests can mention upon leaving the hotel. We could be seated by the dinner table and have 5 different persons asking about the food and if everything is okay. It did not bother us really, but I guess that it could for some people tho.

All in all, it was a great experience and I'm sure I will come back some day! Thank you Devi Garh!

On a recent trip to India, I traveled with my mother and sister taking local trains as well as private taxis to see much of Rajasthan. Along the way we had booked one luxury hotel, the Devi Garh in Udaipur. When we arrived we found it to be an old castle about 400 years old built alongside a small town that is still in existence. The hotel is truly amazing! It is set about 20kms from Udaipur requiring a taxi ride (in our case about $15 from the train station) through winding mountains into a semi rural community. The views across the mountains are beautiful but so is the hotel itself set high on a hill and built in beautiful white stone. We had a superior room finished in white marble set across two levels - it was incredible. The staff were fabulous -helpful and efficient, always acting with interest and kindness. I arrived sick and they could not do enough to help out including asking the chef to cook me a chicken soup to be eaten in my room. The food was spectacular with options of buffet or al la carte for all meals. There is a good size pool overlooked by a a lounge area, a private company offering massage and spa treatments (best facial and massage that i have ever had) and a few free services that are really useful such as a guided walk around the local town. This is not to be missed! All in all it was a large part of our budget for the holiday but one that we would not have passed up. It was luxury that was well worth it!

Room Tip: If you can afford the more expensive rooms within the hotel then go ahead - great views from the roo...

Spent two nights at Devi Garh, Udaipur for a friend’s wedding. The palace was stunning, the views spectacular and the rooms nothing short of luxurious. There was a dedicated (and large) team of staff to tend to our every need around the clock and they were all very professional.

The food provided was delicious. Made the most of the pool, jacuzzi and beautiful outdoor areas. I had the best sleep I had in my two months in India as the beds were so comfy. Rose petals on arrival, a pillow menu, internet access, a good laundry service, amazing bathrooms and everything else one would expect of such a hotel.

Of course such opulence comes at a price, and while I enjoyed every moment, I probably wouldn’t pay for it myself. However, for those seeking peace, relaxation and magnificence, and who are willing to pay for it, this is an excellent choice.

We recently visited Devi Garh for a short retreat from the city, it was a relaxing and peaceful stay. Beautiful property and courteous staff. The service was very personalized, we felt as if we were the only guests around. Also, the little extra things that the staff did for us added up to a very wonderful experience. Staff & Service expectations were exceeded. Also, the Pool table is fantastic, so is the pool room. Will definitely visit again.

We went to have lunch and now vow to return to stay. The lunch was of really refined Indian cuisine--among the finest I have had anywhere. Upon querying the restaurant staff about possibly seeing the hotel property, a front desk staffer showed up in no time to guide us and was as helpful and courteous as can be. The property seems stunning. The Aravali Suite was one of the prettiest and most unique hotel rooms I've ever seen with marble everywhere. I can't wait to return for a proper stay. This old but renovated palace does seem fit for a king.
