“Great food & location, welcoming & friendly”
Reviewed 11 January 2012

We stayed here for 3 days during Diwali in 2010. We booked by email with Ramu, the owner, who also arranged a driver to bring us from Bundi to Udaipur for a reasonable rate. Rupa the chef is incredibly talented and a very warm presence at the guesthouse. The food was so good we took all of our dinners here. The location is great--we had a little balcony overlooking the lake. The room was nice--they don't do daily housekeeping like some hotels but they do tell you this ahead of time. On our last night we shared an after dinner tea with Ramu and watched the Diwali fireworks over the lake for a very memorable evening. I think Ramu and Rupa are what make this place great.

Ramu and the gang are delightful. They turned our stay in Udaipur into a easy and relaxing experience, beginning with arranging an airport pickup for us (Rs. 400). This is a family run guest house that goes back three generations but has been continually updated and doesn’t feel out of date. The ambience is great and the views from the rooftop and lake facing rooms are breathtaking. We stayed in room 201 which had a balcony overlooking the lake. The water is lukewarm to warm and the water pressure was good. Everything seemed very clean and each room we saw had great charm.

The café in the lobby has the best coffee in Udaipur. Wifi is available for free in the entire hotel.

We stayed in a balcony room for 3 nights. The room was a good size, bed was a bit worn down, wifi worked well. The extra 1000 rupees for the room with a balcony was not worth it. The balcony is tiny, barely big enough to squeeze in two chairs, and there is no shade to escape the midday sun. For most of the day it is unusable, except for drying laundry, but that's forbidden. We only saw the owner when we arrived to sign in and he was absent for the rest of our stay. Rupa was excellent though, cooking us the best meal we had in one month in India.

The location is quite good, but by no means quiet. The local women do their laundry at the lakes edge. Bright and early they will be beating their wet laundry between their wooden mallet and the concrete surrounding the lake. It's a great photo op and gives the area some character, but if you're a light sleeper you may want to stay further from this part of the lake.

Overall Jheel is an okay place to stay. We would probably stay somewhere else next time and just visit the restaurant.

This place really made Udaipur something special for us.

We stayed for 3 days and had a fantastic and very cheap room at the old and cheaper guesthouse, overlooking the lake - though most of the windows were covered by a tree.

The hotel has a really nice roof-top terrace and a wonderful restaurant under the terrace, both overlooking the lake and most of Udaipur. The staff is faboulous and the food in the restaurant is, I believe, some of the best in Udaipur. They do cooking-classes, too, and though we didn't try it I believe you would be able to get some fantastic tips about indian cooking.

Most recommendable!

Jheel Guest House had a variety of rooms to choose from, having the ability to accomodate the budget traveller as well as the "flashpacker." We loved our lake view double room, and I think it was one of the nicest bathrooms we had in India.

Rupa takes great pride in his cooking and restaurant, the result being an awesome dinner experience. Eating on the rooftop our first night in Udaipur, the curries were the best we've had through our India travels. In fact, we didn't feel the need to go anywhere else for dinner, letting Rupa cook for us every night! Soooo good!

Definitely would stay there again. They also were extremely helpful in calling ahead to our next hotel (one of our choosing) and securing a room. Udaipur felt like a well deserved treat in the middle of a month long journey through India!

My sister and I stayed in a room which had wide views of the lake and was warmed by the afternoon sun (it was cold). Ramu, the owner is very helpful with advice and the kitchen staff are great. The cost of the room was amongst the higher prices we paid in Rajasthan but made worthwhile because of the views and sunlight available. A variety of room prices are available.

We had a really great time here. Rooms are clean, nice and cosy and the owner and the cook are very friendly and helpful. I spent Christmas here with six other friends. We celebrated it on the lovely waterside terrace with an amazing view of the lake and the city. I definitely recommend it.
