“Very acceptable place to stay for the right price”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2011

They seem to have a wide variety of rooms for a wide variety of prices which seemed to vary from person to person and day to day, along with the levels of friendliness. But overall we were very happy with our stay as we ended up in what was probably their most basic room (large, clean, quiet) for a really good price. But best to show up without your bags and look at a few rooms. Restaurant views were good, staff up there was always friendly, and food was pretty good.

We arrived in Udaipur intending to stay 4 nights at Poonam Haveli but checked out after the first night. The sheets were dirty, the bathroom hadn't been cleaned and was full of someone's hair. There was no hot water. And our bedroom had windows looking into the courtyard. We had a terrible night's sleep as the walls were so thin, that the family in the room next to us may as well have been in our room they were so loud (we could even hear them spit...)

The next morning, having been told that breakfast was included, we were informed as we were half way through eating it, that in fact it wasn't. We kicked up a fuss, and it was only with some reluctance that they changed their minds.

Poonam Haveli is a pleasant haveli located in Lal Ghat, the bustling area close to Lake Pichola and the Lake Palace. The location is very central - a short walk to the city palace and to the lake - but the only views of the lake are from the roof; none of the rooms have lake views (some guide books say that some rooms do have a lake view, which is misleading).

The rooms themselves are clean, spacious and comfortable, with choices between AC and non-AC rooms and two '007' suites with street and courtyard views - we were shown around the rooms by the friendly staff before we stuck with our original booked one.

The only major downside was the owner/head of staff. Every time he spoke to us, he was trying to sell us something - taxi transfers, courses, tuk-tuk tours, even laundry - that would get him a commission, even whipping out a calculator to work out his percentages. We found out his prices were quite a bit higher than what we could get elsewhere and he made it clear he wasn't happy we didn't buy from him. He didn't make us feel welcome at all.

Next time I go to Udaipur (which I will - what a beautiful place), I'll try somewhere else in the same area.

A nicely located hotel in the beautiful center of Udaipur. We arrived with a train - which was 5 hours late - and still our pickup from the terminal worked perfectly. Our stay was for two nights in a simple and clean (but not stainless) room. We found the service was good and the hotel and restaurant staff was nice and friendly. Also worth mentioning is the restaurant food, which is good for a yummy good value dinner in a nice roof-top-restaurant with a good view.

The thing we liked best was the table and chairs just outside our room in a little alcove. Felt like our own private balcony and we often sat out there. We spent 3 nights here and found it be very clean. We ate on our balcony ordering in from the restaurant and loved the food. The staff were friendly and helpful and I would stay there again if visiting Udaipur

We got the huge room with the tangerine curtains for 2000Rs (see website)! It was clean and comfortable. We had hot water after turning on the geyser, although post shower a very small puddle mysteriously appeared in the middle of the very large bathroom. The hotel is just like it looks on their web site. We got 16 items laundered for 126Rs. The management was friendly and helpful. The restaurant was wonderful and a saviour. We are a family with girls aged 9 and 11, all had been ill before arrival. The menu was simple but covered indian, chinese and basic western. The food was lovely, cooked to order and the service was perfect. The waiter even made fresh ginger and lemon for our youngest who had a cough. You can eat on the rooftop but the terrace below is best and has fabulous views of the lake palace and the hills beyond. We took all our meals here, the only place we did so in India. This was cheapest place we stayed but it was also the best value. Other reviews mention noise. Our room had a window at the front and sleeping on the 2nd bed by this window I did wake when the Jagdish temple played chants on the loudspeaker at 5am. The dogs and even cows join in. However, this is unavoidable in Lal Ghat area. The hotel is a few streets away and it is on a side road so I'm sure others suffer far more. Ear plugs take care of it and the kids and my wife slepped through it. The alternative is to stay some distance away, but the location here is perfect. If this is your price range I totally recommend it.

A cautionary tale about the official Rajasthan Tourist Development (RDTC)! We had arrived early on an overnight train and immediately booked a car trip to Jodhpur with RDTC office at the station. The person they referred us to then also became our taxi to our hotel. He promptly took us to his cousin's as he said it was better. It wasn't. The car we then got to Jodhpur when we left was pretty knackered although the AC did work. The hotel we then went to in Ranakpur, which was actually very nice, paid our driver commission. Lunch en route, turned down, was westerners only. Driver offered option of a short tour on arrival in Jodhpur for 1200 Rs (about triple what it should be). Basically the RDTC is at least 20% more than you should pay, you get less, still get hard sell and it is involved in the commission racket. You have been warned.
