“Budget option”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

Lalghat Guesthouse is one of the oldest guesthouses in Udaipur, and it shows, but it is still a good budget option.

PROs: excellent location on the water, good view from the rooftop, quiet, range of options from dorms to ensuite rooms, clean.

CONs: no toilet paper provided (1st guesthouse in India where I've had to buy my own); no wifi, everything is a bit worn - walls need a paint, sheets are clean but ancient, everything looks a bit threadbare.

For the price, it is very reasonable, but I would probably find something with a bit more atmosphere if I came back to Udaipur. Oh, and with the essentials: toilet paper and wifi!

One of the cheapest options with the best views in Udaipur. Great location. Very clean but basic rooms. Unreliable hot water. Kind and helpful staff.

This place is basic and cheap but clean and safe. The views and location are stunning against the river. The food is good and the service friendly and relaxed. It is very quiet at night. I was ill and after we checked out they let me sleep in the staff quarters which was very kind. The roof top and balconies are great.

We stayed here for two nights in the heritage suite which was made up of little rooms and provided fantastic views of the lake, being right on it. The view from our bed in the morning was beautiful and we couldnt have chosen a better view or location. The room is full of character and, apart from a few ants, clean. There is a great little terrace area and roof top seating area where you can enjoy breakfast and watch the sunset in the evening. The staff (particularly the manager) aren't especially friendly, but there is internet and a shop on site. Beware of the many copycat hotels with very similar names on the same street, but the real one is a great budget option for Udaipur.

We spent three nights at this budget option in the heart of the old city in Udaipur. Our room was one with traditional carved stone arches and shuttered windows opening directly onto Lake Pichola. There were mosquito nets provided and a ceiling fan. There are many less expensive room choices at the guesthouse also although we only paid 1500Rs per night. The magnificent City Palace and many intriguing temples are an easy walk from the guest house. There is plenty of rooftop dining in the area all with commanding views of the incredible architecture of "the white city".

I stayed in the dorm for 100 IRS a night and it was perfect. Plus it has THE best view across the lake and the palace. There are lots of copy cats with similar names which are awful, so make sure you find the old and original Lalghat, it has been going the longest and it is in the best location. Staff are nice too, and offer all the services you need.

Room Tip: Dorm is brilliant.

Look - it's a 300 year old building located right smack on the lake with a beautiful view of the island palace, whats not to like? I stayed in a 400 rupees a night room that was impeccably clean and also had a wonderful view of the lake - but I spent most of my days sat in the breezy balcony chatting away to the eccentric travellers the guest house attracts. It has great internet facilities, a shop packed full of supplies, cheap snacks and tea, and is the only place I've stayed recommended by Lonely Planet that has kept its prices at those quoted in the book. Other travellers screamed about how wonderful the alcove dorms were, which came complete with lockers to store away valuables. Easily the best hotel on my trip, for the money.
