“Rose Petals”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

The lobby or check in to this hotel is on the mainland. You take a covered boat to get to the main entrance. Waiting for you is a man with a big umbrella and as you walk in rose petals fall from above. How can you beat that for an entrance! The central courtyard is amazing and there is one guy there who's only job is to chase the birds away. I thought that was very funny and I started helping him in the end. The pool is small but the poolside service is better than anything I have ever gotten. Gym is good and the rooms are small and extremely beautiful. Take someone you really like there and they will like you even more!

Room Tip: I would be surprised if there are bad rooms. Facing the city and the palace makes a great view.

Everything in this hotel was closing to perfection. Service was just astonishing. An incredible luxury experience. Go there.

Of course perfection has a price, and it is rather steep.

Amazing property with excellent service, from check in at the boat pier to check out. Dinner on the rooftop was wonderful too, lots of flickering candles and all the lights around the lake reflected in the water made it feel like a fairytale palace. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. The Maharajas certainly knew how to live!

A very sad state for a heritage property. Highly overrated. They over estimate their Brand Value.

I was allowed there was dinner, after requests from my hotel to the Taj and after agreeing paying a bomb as cover charges.

The service quality was very laid back and very artifical. We were not welcome there and the staff did not seem interested to my preferences. Other than very basic professional courtesy, we felt like unwanted intruders.

The staff clothing was very dull and faded. The palace was poorly lit. The property environment was like someone died in there. Guest comfort and preference was the last on their list.

Equally bad was the quality of their food and drinks.

The only reason we were there was to fulfill a fancy of being at the Lake Palace, but we were disappointed.

Actually more than anything, the childhood dream/ fancy/ charm/ and everything nice about the Lake palace has ended with a hurt heart.

Room Tip: Dont stay here.

Having gone to a number of special hotels we have always wanted to go to the Lake Palace, it is a destination hotel. We were luckly upgraded to the Maharaja's personal suite (some distant Maharaja, not the current one) which helped firm our view of the hotel, it was like staying in the most tasteful museum interior. Every staff member is highly trained and make you believe that they are there because they want you to, and care about you, having the best time of your life. Truely!!! We would order dinner and then be given a complimentary desert because you really should have desert as well. Or we ordered tea at the pool and were given complimentary rose lemonade, water and chocolates as a welcome while we waited for our tea.

We did bring an IPod only to find that there was no IPod dock, or any other music option. We mentioned this to reception and a little later two wonderful classical Indian CDs turned up for us to listen to.

After we checked out we ordered lunch and then asked for the bill only to be told that, it is sad that it is our final meal so it is complimentary.... oh....gotta love it!

Great food, wonderful location, fantastic architecture/ interiors, brilliant staff. If you can only afford to stay at one expensive hotel in your life this is it.

Are we going back? Most definately! P.S. I am not being pay for this.

Room Tip: Not sure, but we stayed in room 117 which we told was one of the best suites. I think there was anot...

Check-In: The check-in experience was top notch, from the greeting at the hotel pier to the boat ride... Lugage delivery to our room was also very quick...

Hotel public areas: The hotel is simply stunning.. Especally at night when candles are lit in all common areas.. The hotel aalso has several performances such as traditional dancing aand a puppet show going on...

Restaurants: One regret is that out of the 3 restaurants, the only oneoffering a view is the rooftop restauant, with a prix fixe menu, serving contemporary continental cuisine.. I believe the experience would be better if Indian food were served... Nevertheless, we had diner at the indian restaurant, which opens up to an inner courtyard...

Things to do: We only stayed 1 night and had planned on visiting the Lake Palace... The boat ride from the hotel to the pier is about 2-3 minutes, and then, it's only a 300meter walk to the City palace... This left us with plenty of time to hang out in the hotel and roam around... The sunset view from the hotel terrace is quite beutifull

Service: Was above average.. Every person we ran into was extremely helpful and polite. Out of all the hotels I stayed in India (Aman New Delhi, Oberoi Agra, Oberoi Mumbai) this was probaably the one where the employees where the nicest (albeit service in all these locations was grreat).

Room: We had a standard Lake View room #207 (with a view of the City Palace)... The room was cute but nothing out of the ordinary... From the pictures I have seen, it seems the suites are much more luxurious, in addition to being bigger in size... Honestly, the City Lake view is no necessarily the best view, so no need, in my opinion, to ask for it... Lake views all around the hotel are quite nice...

Bathroom: Was rather disappointing... The bathtub was a small standard recatngle (similar to those one would expect in a US Sheraton or Marriott). Again, picture of the more expensive rooms sho much nicer bathrooms than what we got. I suggest the hotel renovate these soon.

Room Tip: Lake View, no need to ask for City Palace View.. Any Lake View is just as good.

I had wondered if it would be worthwhile paying the price for the Royal Spa Retreat (76,000INR), but I wanted to give my wife a treat to celebrate our anniversary. In the end, we both concluded it was worth every cent. We were impressed when we stayed at the Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra 2 years ago . However, the Taj Lake Palace far surpasses it. While both are beautiful hotels in great locations, the crucial difference was the level of service rendered.

The service was first-class throughout the entire stay from the moment of the airport limousine pickup. From the reception to the 3 restaurants to the spa, we never had to identify ourselves or ask for our room number. They instantly knew us by name and which room we were from. Every request was attended to promptly and cheerfully. If you ask the staff for directions, they would invariably insist on bringing you to the place themselves. What Anirudhvb said about staff being greedy for tips is totally untrue; he must have gone to a different hotel. There are many signs informing you not to tip the staff, and we never doubted for a moment throughout our 3 days that they truly delighted to serve the guest like royalty. We have been to hotels where they try to rip you off for everything, but it was the opposite here. We got lots of free snacks, free bottled water in the room and cars, free food items during our meals, late check-out, waiver of internet access charges and arranging horse-riding trip for us (with third-party) without extra charge. They may not be cheap, but they are definitely not cheapskate.

After the rose petal shower welcome and drink, we were promptly brought to our room by our personal butler. It took us a while to realise that they had given us a 2-level upgrade to a Royal Suite because they didn't even mention it! The suite was all that we could ask for, spacious, beautifully decorated, with a bathroom fit for a king, and a fantastic view of the lake and mountains. We were given a bewildering choice of pillows and quilts, as well as more fruits, chocolates, pop corn, soft drinks (all complimentary) than we could consume.

We ate at all 3 restaurants. The rooftop fine dining experience under a full moon was wonderfully romantic. They could have squeezed in many more tables, but they chose to keep it to a small number, so there was lots of space and privacy. The food was excellent and we appreciated the nice little touches, like the sorbet to cleanse your palate before the main course and the charcoal brazier for each table to keep us cosy despite the chilly air. The food at the other 2 restaurants was also good. We were more than satisfied with the quality and spread of the breakfast which was included in our package. What was most notable was the service at the Indian food restaurant. The staff by the name of Jaydeep was knowledgeable, attentive, humorous and make the evening thoroughly enjoyable. We were not hungry so we didn't order a main course or dessert, but he insisted on treating us to a sample of the lamb, as well as complimentry dessert.

Our package included 3 hours on the beautiful private spa boat, which also had its own steam room and outdoor bath. The quality of the spa treatment was average, but as always the standard of service was impeccable. The fruits and drinks were freshly delivered by motor boat only when it was time to be served. The staff gave us total privacy; they would materialise only when you press the call button. It was a unique, romantic and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

We did the usual tourist staff in Udaipur, but honestly, it would be good enough to simply go there and stay in the hotel. It was our best anniversary celebration ever. We were sad to leave.
