Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel
Ranked #16 of 167 Hotels in Udaipur
Certificate of Excellence

Jagat Niwas Palace hotel gives you the taste of how noblemen lived in Rajasthan. It's a haveli converted into a hotel which is on the shore of lake pichola. the rooms are spacious with simple decor with traditional rajasthani feel. The roof-top restaurant is very good offering nice traditional and western fare to partake while looking at the lake. You can see lake palace, Jag Mandir from here. Just outside the hotel you have boat service for a lake ride or visit to Jag Mandir. Jagdish temple and local bazaar is just few metres away. Even the city palace is at a walking distance. It is a nice desitination espacially in winter when weather is nice.

We spent two days in a Pichola Suite overlooking the eponymous lake early in February 2012. The hotel is clearly beautifully situated and we chose it because we'd rather be on the lake than in a superior hoyel a few miles out of town. . Our room did everything we expected. We found the staff very variable. Some were charming, amusing even. Others were stern -faced and unresponsive.

The hotel plugs itself as having the best restaurant in Udaipur. We can't comment on that, though I would say that we thought the food there was adequate rather than delicious and certainly would not compare well with many of the normal indian restaurants we frequent in the UK. .

Clearly considerable effort is spent on keeping the courtyards looking nice and the views from the terrace were really good. But take these views away and in my opinion you have a pretty average hotel.

People with walking difficulty should note that the hotel has several sets of steep and irregular stairs to some rooms, the restaurant and the roof terrace. It is true that its pretty much impossible to get a car right to the door of the hotel. However the hotel staff will carry bags from your car to your room.

I could certainly not support a maximum score for this hotel, which comes about half way in our ranking of hotels used on a recent trip to Rajasthan

We stayed one night at the Jagat Niwas and were delighted with it. We had asked for a lake view room when we reserved and it had outstanding views out towards the Lake Palace where we stayed two nights later. The room was very pleasant and the food in the restaurant was good. The hotel is very convenient to visit the City Palace. Because it is in the old part of the town you cannot get right to the hotel door by car, but the staff were very helpful. Have a look at my wife's blog for more photos: http://gallivantingisadora.blogspot.com/2012/01/udaipur-india.html

Room Tip: Ask for the lake view when booking

We've really enjoyed our stay here. The hotel is in a good location and although our room was basic it was very clean and the staff very helpful. Laundry was well done and returned on time. Restaurant provided tasty food. Wonderful setting and havelli well appointed. The hotel looked after our luggage during the day as we were catching the night sleeper. Did not find good internet connection in hotel but liked internet shop just outside hotel. Would hightly recommend this hotel

Room Tip: Our room 201 was on the ground floor and had a low entry to bathroom. May not suit tall people who...

Stayed two nights and had a "ladies courtyard" room. Nothing special about the room. The views from the rooftop especially at dusk and evening were very nice. Dining room staff were good but would not say the same about those at reception. Awkward location to get to and once you are about 100 metres away the noise from traffic is terrible.

Room Tip: Lake view would be ideal

Had booked Jagat Niwas through the net based on traveller reviews. Was more than satisfied with the location, room quality and service.

Had a room with an awesome view of the Udaipur lake palace. Spent a lot of time in the restaurant overlooking the lake.

The hotel is an old haveli done up elegantly. My 8 year old son loved the bed by the window. The rooms and the bathrooms have a lot of character. Would definitely recommend this place for travelers not looking at spending a fortune to get a stay over-looking the lake.

If there is one thing, would suggest they include breakfast as part of the package...

Room Tip: Be sure you get a room facing the lake.

This was a very nice place to stay.Things you should know - pro's: great location, beautiful property, lovely people working there, good restaurant for hanging out or eating, super location. Con's: we had two rooms one on the first floor one on the second - second floor room was really noisy. In that particular room there is a window in the bathroom that opens to a little alley or balcony or something, very loud - dog crying for hours each night, people bustling around. So avoid that room if possible, kids' room heard nothing. Second, they referred us to a shop immediately outside the haveli for help with some travel planning and that was not terrific (a little too self-serving in recommendations), and third, (and now you know the true extent of my phobias!) the door locks were really charming old style sliding dead bolts one on the inside and one on the outside with therefore no master key. So what if there was some kind of medical emergency inside and no one could get to you!? My solution: just don't think about it... ha ha and yes we all lived!

Room Tip: avoid second floor room with bathroom window on the alley/balcony
