Chilly room on winter nights, but excellent restaurant

Review of Kluney Manor
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jan 28, 2019
Reception needs to up its game - we had a poor welcome; indeed it was even hard to find reception on arrival (room labels are obscurely small). It feels as if Kluney Manor are so proud of their (admittedly lovely) garden that insufficient attention is paid to some other aspects of the business.
Not much information is provided for guests in the room and that was contradictory (e.g. re restaurant hours) and unfriendly tone.
We visited in January when days were lovely and warm but nights were quite chilly. I understand the hotel is not expensive, but nevertheless I was surprised that we had to pay extra for a heater for our uninsulated room for the evening. (Not to mention having to pay cash rather than have it added to our room bill.)
Our "classic cottage" room itself was not particularly pleasant - a fairly uncomfortable sitting room looking onto the garden (far too cold to sit in during the evening), a large dark bedroom in the middle, and a poor clothes cupboard and ok bathroom. However, the bed was comfortable and had a good duvet!
I also had a battle to get a hand towel or bath mat for the bathroom - had to specifically ask, each day.
The restaurant was excellent - we dined there 2 nights and enjoyed both meals, as well as our breakfast.
Its location in Ooty isn't great - too far to walk into Ooty central, and the road is very rutted for driving.
The garden is lovely (topiary, various delights) although the garden furniture wasn't very comfortable.
We were in a room which required walking up a path to the restaurant, and the first night the path lights didn't come on early enough, which nearly caused a tumble on the steps. Not good!

The hotel is situate far from main city but not at a height. So the outside view is not so great from hotel. Hotel is divided in three parts. First part which is closer to the maingate have reception, restaurant and suite rooms. Second part where we stayed called classic cottages. Very old style cottage completely made of wood. Huge bed room and a small sitting area. TV was very and small and was not working. As it was raining we could not use the fireplace as all woods were wet. Hot water comes for 2 hours in morning and evening. But the best part of the cottage was huge lawn infront of it. Third part is called rustic cottages - we did not stay here neither we recomend to stay here.

Breakfast was included, but better to avoid. There is no taste and the menu dont change. But otherwise hotel restaurant was good. We used to have dinner from there and its good.

Added two pictures I took looking at my room from the lawn space. I was specifically how this place will be. But was in for a surprise. The place is very well maintained. They have huge collection of awards to prove that. Huge lawn space. Restaurant works from 8 to 10 in night. Food and the menu are good too. Bit pricey but good. Staffs are always helpful. I would most definitely recommend this place to everyone. Will try and stay there too next time when I go to Ooty.

It is like 10 mins drive from the resort to the Ooty boat house. GPS showed us a route which was tricky but we found the easier and most accessible route.

I visited this place for the 2nd time. Editing my review based on my visit on November 2018. Management has become crap now. We booked 4 rooms in the classic cottage series, 3 ladies and 4 gentleman which included my senior citizen parents. They gave one room in between to some bachelors or a group of guys. They started partying in the garden right in front of our room and by 12am they were heavily drunk. By 1am they started playing high volume music and all other stuff. We couldn't sleep till 3 am. Reception didn't receive calls. We thought of teaching them a lesson but they were more in numbers and dead drunk. Why did you guys do this, are you fools to allow such a group in between families? We went to relax and you didn't let us sleep the entire night. Plus in the bill they charged 50 rupees for a bottle of water and put GST on it, highly illegal stuff. Food has become super costly now. I met another group of gentleman their who were fighting for similar things of mismanagement, they were served non veg when they ordered veg food since they were Jain..

We had lunch at this restaurant and was quite smitten by its garden and old time charm. The food was good and service as well. The garden and outdoor area is very charming. The property itself is quite close to the city and well maintained.

Great Place to stay! Well maintained garden and gorgeous roorms, highly
recommend for the people who badly need their break from office/business
Life to rest and relax. We had a great time in absolute freshness. My kid had
loads of fun in open spaces and greenery all around and pampered along with
good food.

Courteous staff, entire team from Kluney did an awesome work. Special hats
off to Mr.Shamsheer (OM), Ms. Jessi (Guest relation), Mr Saravauan (F&B).
Mr.Ajith (H.K) for their hospitality

Cons: TV is too small for the room , Room fire is chargeable.
