Arriving in Sarnath to spend 2 nights can be quiet challenging if you don't book in advance. It is a big bouddhist pilgrimage center and all hotels were full. We headed up to this guesthouse that is in Lonely Planet. With no other choice in town, we stayed there for 2 nights.
The room and the bathroom were very clean, but for 450 Rs a night (after bargainning, 500 Rs announced), we missed the hot shower and the TV which is a standard now in most Indian guesthouses for around 250 Rs.
The food, vegetarian only, was really good, but a veg thali, even if refilled till you're full, shouldn't be 100 Rs! And a massala chai for 30 Rs, we felt like they were really enjoying too much the fact there is not so many options to sleep in Sarnath!
Last thing, Doctor Jain has a program with a french association for education of kids in a school nearby. We were not concerned but we were shocked to hear he was doing a "discount" of 50 Rs on the room and 20 Rs on the meal to people who come there to give their free time for charity! How can you apply prices that are double what they should be to people who come to help you in a charity program ???
