“Possibly the best resort we've ever stayed at”
Reviewed 8 March 2012

The title probably says it all. Between the 3 beautiful infinity pools, the luxurious tranquil surroundings and the unfailingly polite, pleasant and accomodating staff I am at a loss to think how they could possibly improve.

The morning breakfast was something we constantly looked forward to with a vast choice of well prepared food. With onsite restaurants catering to Indonesia, Italian and seafood styles as well as a mix of western and asian choices there was always something to try. The coconut sorbet was amazing.

Whilst we didn't try out the separate spa complex (including a 30% fresh/70% seawater one) there was a 30% fresh/70% sea infinity pool that overlooks the beach which ended up to be our favourite location.

I've attached 3 pictures that pretty much sum up the experience.

In short: you cannot go wrong with this resort as a top quality Bali experience.

We arrived in time for the bar to open at 4.30pm after being told we would probably have to queue if we got there any later. As the taxi driver dropped us off he said "I don't think kids are allowed in the bar though" what????? And we had our 8 year old with us.
No queue and we were the first non-hotel people on the inclinator - also no problems with our son coming in!!!! Remember though - no board shorts or alcohol branded tshirts allowed in.
First hot day we had had since arriving 4 days earlier - and let me tell you - this wasn't really the place to be when it's hot!!! The staff were perspiring heavily as we're we very shortly after arriving we used the umbrellas provided which along with the cold towels were a reprieve.
I'm sure the sunsets are magnificent here however it was far too hot for us to stay the hour and a half to watch it
4 alcoholic drinks later (yummy), 2 waters and a lemon, lime and bitters and we had to leave. $100 later-so definitely Perth prices, and we took the inclinator back up the cliff. We did think it a bit rich that we were charged $9 for service when the drinks were already expensive for Bali - but it was a once in a lifetime experience.
Happy to recommend

Attended a conference here and stayed in the hotel area rather than the Villas. The hotel rooms are large and have been very luxurious, although now are looking tired and worn.

The entire resort seems to suffer from the same issue - it was a Four Seasons property in the past and has changed hands, with the new owners faced with the mammoth task of lifting an aged 5 star facility from a 3-4 star level.

Lots of little things need doing - all of the floors in the tiled rooms and hallways need replacing because of cracked and stained tiles. The shower leaked badly and the ceiling fan rattled and hummed whenever activated. There were renovations underway while we were there so it will be interesting to see what they are able to achieve.

The facilties of the hotel are very good - the Rock Bar is at the base of a cliff and features a funky modern open lounge, reached by inclinator and serving expensive drinks while seated over the crashing waves. Definitely a must do, although the queue for non-guests seemed quite long.

Breakfast was average - the usual buffet with a lot of cold food and bitter coffee. Even the Asian selection looked tired.

The staff were universally polite, friendly and helpful. The resort is well away from the shops and a drive to the beaches, so once in the grounds people tended to stay.

Overall a large and tired resort-style property, staffed by nice people. Average location, good facilities and huge gardens.

Room Tip: If staying for any length of time go for a villa near the main resort

Dear ‘Yarro’
Thank you for your feedback on your recent stay at AYANA. I am glad to hear that you were impressed by our friendly and caring team, facilities and Rock Bar. However, I regret that you were disappointed by your room. As you noted, we are completing a major renovation this month which upgrades all hotel rooms and suites including new decor, furniture and bathrooms with rain showers. The result is a major upgrade and I do hope you are able to visit us again in future to experience the difference. I must make a correction, AYANA was previously a Ritz-Carlton managed property, not Four Seasons. Our owner decided to rebrand to an independent property in 2009 under new management of Capella Hotel Group, run by Horst Schulze, former founder and President Director of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company LLC. Since the rebranding, the resort has received prestigious awards including being voted Asia’s Best Resort (2011 Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Awards) and World’s Best Spa Resort (2010 Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Awards). Thankfully our owner continues to invest to maintain the quality of our facilities, and our team remain committed to the highest level of excellence in service, which has allowed us to receive positive recognition post rebranding.

Thank you again for your review so we may continuously improve for all guests.

Best regards,
Clive Edwards

We had arranged to meet someone at this bar at 4.30pm. We got there soon after and had to wait in the queue at the top of the hill for half an hour. We had started talking to an Inodnesian lady, and she was given priority entrance to the downstairs area. Whilst we were waiting in line, we got a bintang each which cost nearly AUD $10. It was extremely hot in the direct sun. Some people who were coming back up, looked really hot and sweaty and not having fun. Once down below we then had to line up again in the sun. By now we had been waiting for nearly 1.5hours, sweating heaps and wondering if it was totally worth it. We noticed that some of the guys who got pass the fashion police upstairs were now being targeted downstairs, where there is a boutique that you are expected to purchase from to gain entry. By now I had talked my way in to see if my friend was there, which she wasnt. I returned to my friends and declared it was definately time to leave. The view was fantastic, but as hotel guests had priority over visitors which I can understand, then this place is not worth visiting as there is too much hassel. There are plenty of other options out there. Our driver took us to a beach part of Jimbaran Bay where the bintangs cost only $2, and you could watch local girls practice their dancing and Balinese families enjoying the evening. That was well worth it.

Dear ‘Maurs_hunny’
Thank you for your feedback on your visit to Rock Bar. I understand that you were disappointed by having to queue up to gain access to Rock Bar. As you noted, our in-house guests receive priority access, while we apply the dress code consistently to all guests. The Rock Bar boutique is managed separately and not related to our dress code.

Thank you again and best regards,

Ayana exceeded my expectations. My husband and i were travelling with our 2 y old but were in a resort view room. I wasnt sure how this was going to work but it was fine-I just had to work around her sleep time and relax when she was sleeping. The room was kept very clean and serviced regularly throughout the day-we were always getting clean towels! The staff and service couldnt have been better, any request was always attended to with haste. The buffet breakfast in padi was plentiful and you could have had anything you wanted.
Together with my daughter I spent quite a bit of time in the kids club and the main pool. The staff in thhe club were great and really engaged well with her. Particular thanks to Agung, Raini, Suri and Adi who were very patient and great with her. By th epool we need to thank Rendi and Kris who were so attentive and helpful, made our stay very special.
All the staff in reception were great but a special thanks to Dwi.
While here we ate at Sami(italian);dava , Hon Zen(Japanese) and Damar. I couldnt fault the food in any of the restaurants. The best was probablt Dava for food and ambience, the Japanese food was also scrumptious. Prices were not cheap but ok.
All in all we had a fabulous time and would definitely go back if we have the chance.
My only criticism would be of communication-you have to dial the lobby whenever you need anything which seemed a long way round sometimes.

Room Tip: The resrt view rooms near kids club and on ground floor made for easy access to the pool and breakfa...

My husband and I went to Bali during the Chinese New Year for our annual holiday. We chose to stay in the Ayana for 5 nights because of its solitude and isolated location. The buildings on their own are state of art and we were thrilled by its grand yet exotic feel from our first impressions. The staff were very helpful and tentative which made up for the slight language barrier. We were upgraded to the "ocean view deluxe room" unexpectedly which we of course did not question and were really grateful considering it was at the busy Chinese New Year holiday period! The room and view were both amazing. We tried three of their restaurants and the Rock Bar. You couldn't fault the quality of their food and service. And the million-dollar sunset view from the Rock Bar is a must must do! We particularly enjoyed their sea water pool which was located right at the edge of the cliff. That sensation of endless water infinity when you see the spread of the Indian Ocean as an extension of the pool is priceless. True 5 star service is seen by the pool, where staff regularly change your towels and provide cold water and snacks as well as taking orders for other more elaborate drinks or food if you desire.

A couple of down sides are the internet connection, which I believe many other travellers have complained about, too. Not only is it VERY over-priced but it is machine specific. So if you pay to enable your laptop, you do not get access in the room or hotel wifi on that device. However as most of the travellers there are aiming for some relaxation and stress-free time they can probably bear a few days of peace and serenity. The other thing that is ridiculously overpriced are the spa treatments. When you consider what the actual staff doing the work get paid, "someone" is getting very wealthy indeed. You can do much much better at local spas all over Bali island, such as "Dancing Fingers".

If you want to tour Bali, simply ask a local taxi driver to quote you for a day. It is easily affordable to have a driver take you wherever you want for a day.

Finally, I have to agree with another reviewer about the kind of "customers" at Chinese New Year. The hotel was full of customers from mainland China and some of them, particularly at Breakfast were loud, rude and inconsiderate. So if you are not a fan of a buzzing breakfast scene, you may want to visit at a different time of the year. By the way, the breakfast offerings are superb including freshly cracked coconuts everyday.

Room Tip: we are happy with our upgraded Ocean View Deluxe Room, although we want to try their 700 dollars per...
