I travelled to Ayung Sari Indah for their 5 day Yoga retreat. Having spent some time in Bali i was keen for what appeared to be the "get away from it all" seclusion that this place offered. And i was not disappointed. From the moment of arrival, when i was greeted with a lemongrass and ginger tea and surrounded by smiling children, i knew i was somewhere special.
The setup is simple; a central dining area surrounded by rice paddys and Balinese-style bungalows with outdoor bathrooms. The bungalows are simple, no TV or DVD or aircon, but with the huge balcony overlooking the Ayung river and gazing out over the mountains who needs TV anyway? And as we were perched high up the mountain the nights were quite cool, so i didnt miss aircon at all.
The title of "outdoor bathroom" makes it sound very rustic, but I was charmed by the decorative stone pavings and little statuettes covered in moss, and all the amenities you require in a bathroom are there; loo, shower, bath, handbasin.
The meals were included in the yoga package and were outstanding, with Gustis specialty of banana pancakes for breakfast a real highlight. I loved trying all the different sambals with lunch and dinner.
Yoga was conduced by a German lady living in Ubud for many years by the name of Gabby and we attended 5 x 1.5 hour sessions in total. I was a yoga novice and the other attendee was experienced but Gabby managed to move the sessions at a pace that suited us both.
Included in the package was a walk down to the river where we had a swim and enjoyed the view, climbed back up the mountain to be rewarded with a fresh green coconut chopped off the tree while we watched. We had 2 visits to Bodyworks in Ubud, fantastic massages there. And there was also the walk up the volcano, but i didnt participate in that one ... had a nice sleep in and joined the group for lunch.
On our last night we were joined by many locals who played music while the children danced and we feasted on another of Gustis culinary delights.
Each night i was seranaded by hundreds of frogs who seemed to be the only other creatures on the mountain. It was truly a relaxing and rewarding experience.
