“Beautiful villa with gorgeous outlook”
Reviewed December 21, 2013 for a stay in December 2013

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Private and relaxing environment. A bit out of town although the street has some good eating and coffee places 10-15 minutes walk away.

The walk into town is part of the charm of the villa. We are peaceful and quiet on the rice paddies while only being a quick walk into town. This is clearly stated in the description of the villa on Flipkey. Nothing hidden.

“Perfect for our family”

We enjoyed 8 nights at the garden cottage. Our daughters, ages 9 and 11, enjoyed having their own bedroom, bathroom, and veranda upstairs. When we arrived they promptly spent the first 30 minutes unpacking everything into the nice wardrobe provided. They also enjoyed the pool almost every day. You should have seen the smiles on their faces when Mary told them the pool was open 24/7!

The kitchen was great, although I have to admit once I saw how cheap and tasty Ubud food is, I didn't bother to cook. Mary provided instant coffee, and a selection of teas, along with sugar, salt and pepper. Bottled water is also provided.

The staff was wonderful. When my daughter caught Bali belly, Wayan offered to fetch some coconut water or other fruit juices. She also took our laundry to the laundromat for us and delivered it when it was finished. If you need a driver, I highly recommend Mary's neighbor, Made. He's funny, speaks great English, and has a very comfortable car. He happily stopped for lunch on our drive to Ubud from Legian, finding us a lovely little warung. He also was willing to drive us into town on short notice (if he wasn't on another job of course) when the girls were just too tired to walk.

The grounds are lovely, providing a peaceful and relaxing surroundings. It's hard to believe it's just a few minutes from a very busy town!

I'm not a spa expert, but we enjoyed the Iman spa just up the road. Prices were quite reasonable by Oz standards, and it was a treat to just rock up to the spa and get a massage or pedicure for $10 or so.

I recommend the place, but just a few cautions. There is, as Mary told us, lots of wildlife. Our cityslicker kids got used to the little geckos on the walls, and were ok with the frogs in the outdoor bathroom. The larger lizards, and the occasional large spider, were a bit disconcerting to us. The wildlife can make a bit of racket in the night/early mornings, especially the frogs, but on the flip side, you don't have the noise from the city or road, as it is set well back (50m) from the main road.

The outdoor bathroom is lovely, especially the shower and bathtub. Every morning we'd find a few beautiful frangipani flowers by the shower. As the girls found out the first day however, there's not enough hot water to properly fill the bathtub. Plenty of water for showers though. Wayan also brought us a drying rack when she saw that we didn't have enough places to hang up all of our swimsuits, rashies, and towels.

Mary was very helpful in the booking process, and provided some helpful advice via email in regards to what we should bring. This property wouldn't be suitable for very young children, because of the antiques, high balconies, open pool, etc, but was just fine for our primary school children.

Dear Ira,

It was a delight having you and your husband. I was very happy to have you back again after your stay in Villa Manis and hope you will return on your next visit to Ubud. Thank you for a fabulous and fun dinner out on the town. We will definitely have to go salsa dancing next time you are here. Cheers, Mary

“Oh so sweet!”
Reviewed December 10, 2012 for a stay in November 2012

What a beautiful place .... We arrived with several options to check out and select and as soon as we walked the path to Mary's Villa we had made our decision. The walkway is a path through rice paddies and then through her beautiful landscaping full of bright colored flowers. The villa is at the end of a 3-building property but it feels like it is all alone between the rice paddies and the lush green garden. The space is well mainained and a 10 minute walk to the main street in Ubud. The staff are super responsive and took care of issues quickly. We did have some dificulty with the internet but Mary and her management team addressed the issue quickly. We also had a problem with the stove shocking us, which it continued to do after a repair. We left it unplugged and used a lighter - again, they tried to handle the problem very quickly. Also, the outdoor shower downstairs was a favorite - day or night ... so beautiful and peaceful. Thanks Mary.

“This is the best place to stay in Ubud”
Reviewed August 8, 2012 for a stay in July 2012

The Garden Cottage is one of three houses set among the rice paddies a few minutes north of the center of town. The owner, Mary Lee, lives in one house. There is a smaller house for a couple. My daughter and I stayed in the larger house, which sleeps four. Both inside and out, the Garden Cottage is beautiful. Mary has chosen wonderful local art to decorate the inside of the houses. There is a peaceful veranda for breakfast and reading with a view over the forest and rice paddies. The bedroom is large and comfortable. Each day two maids come to make the beds, clean the house, and make breakfast if you want it. Besides the beauty of the place, the greatest advantages are peace and quiet away from the madding crowds in downtown and the neighbor, Madeh, who has a van and will pick you up from the airport and drive you wherever you want to go around the island. Both the people and the place at The Garden Cottage are special. I would return there again at any time.
