Good food reasonably priced. It was our choice twice and not dissapointing. Service is nice but a little slow.

Good place for local and western meals. Located close by hotels and shopping. Westerners will feel at home.

We went back to the Canyon after 15 years, and were pleased to find that, unlike the many similar cafes that lined the street before the troubles of 1997 took Bukittinggi off the tourist map, the Canyon Cafe survives.

As always, the menu is a mix of Western backpacker and typical Indonesian, with fair prices and good quantity. The beer is cold, and the food is flavorful. The inevitable tour guide was easy to shake.

If non-smoking is important to you, you're out of luck. The staff and your fellow guests will make certain you "enjoy" the smell of Marlboros while you eat. As for atmosphere, between the blaring TV in back and the roaring muffler-challenged motorcycles whizzing by in front, forget it.

It ain't great, but you won't leave hungry, sick, or feeling ripped off, and you'll help keep an institution alive until the tourist wave starts to surge into Bukittinggi again.
