Toured this fortress as part of our cruise ship excursion and so glad we did. If you are interested in the history of the Crusades and specifically the Templar Knights, this is the place for you. It is well preserved and maintained with both a history of Crusader and Ottoman times. The venue is huge and there is much to se and experience from the massive sea walls, to the Templar tunnels, to the huge Knights Hall and much much more. We had a guide who brought the place to life for us but you can also get the audio guide as well. This is a must see location on any tour to Israel.

We tried 2 different audio guides. They are supposed to work completely automatically by detecting the places you are standing at... It just did not work properly which did not make our stay as enjoyable as it should. Also, not a long line of tourists waiting at the ticket office or at the audio guide station, but it just takes them too much time to actually get things done. Even the stupid return of the audio guide takes 10 minutes. We were not in a rush but we did not feel like we should waste our time for no good reason.

Save some time for this and get the headset tour guide. We did not have much time so we hit the highlights and even then didn't see all. It is a mix of indoor and outdoor areas and has active excavations underway.

Make sure you see this and take a tour if possible. This is an amazing place and I've really never seen anything like it.
