Not the best experience

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jun 29, 2024
Things started out really good. I had booked a night here through a travel agent and added a night myself online. The front desk staff was extremely kind and despite me having booked a different room type they managed to put me in the same room type as my travel agent had booked. That way I did not have to change rooms midway through my stay. Very nicely done.

But from here is was downhill. It turns out the pool is closed until the rainy season starts, which makes no sense. I was at the Hilton and the Lahan and their pools were open which would make sense in 35 degree weather.

It seems like the hotel is used by kids groups a lot. The noise in the lobby area was immense and so was the noise in the room from hallway activity all evening.

And then there is the cleanliness. Hair in the shower - clearly not mine from the black color. Dust and hair around the rim of the toilet. A ripped bedsheet with several stains. I would have liked to enjoy the view of the lake but the net and dirty window prevented me from that. I complained about it to the front desk and they sent a housekeeper to additionally clean the room. The hair in the shower was still there and the toilet had not been cleaned. I decided to clean the bathroom myself and called the front desk to complain again. They took the side of the housekeeper but the staff member came to my room and apologized deeply for his actions. I appreciated this gesture but the room was still dirty and they gave no compensation other than a free visit to their sauna. On a 35 degree day.... They did end up not charging me $4 for a lost keycard but it did not at all make up for the horrible cleaning.

Breakfast was so and so. I ended up going to the nearby Starbucks to get something else.

All in all the experience was not good. But not the worst ever. Commodore is a decent budget hotel but do not expect much.

Room Tip: Do not expect too much. Low price does not make up for the low standard

I wanted to not enjoy this large unimpressive looking hotel, however the opposite happened. We had a large room with a superb view of the lake, with a queen and a single bed. It's a long way from the city centre but a bus or taxi is inexpensive. We ate at the hotel restaurant (al-a-cart). Surprisingly the food was superb and I highly recommend eating in at night to save searching around. Staff are not so good with English but we coped. Sure the room is a little shabby and tired looking but everything functioned. I would worry if it was hot weather as there is no cooling and it can be very stuffy on a mild day but you can open a window at least. There are convenience stores close by. We ate out and had a brilliant lunch at a traditional Korean restaurant which I'd struggle to find again. In the end we loved our stay at the Commodore despite the dreary weather (early April) and enjoyed our time in Gyeongju.

AC was very little. Thought it was overloaded as my tour group came in together on same floor. But at midnight+, it didn't get better so called front desk but after checking, he returned call and said that it was fine and whether the thermostat was put from 21-22. It was placed that and thereafter, I put it down to 1 as air was not moving. The light was streaming in from the outside as there wasn't any curtains, just some wooden grills before the window. Like a disco effect. Really not recommended to take 731 if you need a good night sleep. Kept waking up due to the lousy AC.

Breakfast was decent. Plates were intermittently cleared

Room tip: Never get 731 if you like decent ac and ventilation

A large and modern hotel. Large rooms, kettle, coffee, tea in the room. The room has a balcony with a nice view. In the lobby cafe, ATMs, shop. Tasty breakfasts. Service very nice. There are several shops and small restaurants and a McDonald's near the hotel.

yes it's a little bit old and some things would need a refresh, but the geographic situation was great, excellent to walk around and close to the adventure park. Room average from the size as normal in Korea. A little shop, SPA and Karaoke is situated in the base.
Big and nice park outside, must be very nice in Summer.
Bigger bar with live music....however not a really good singer :-)

4 stars just
This is a huge hotel in an area of many other large resort style hotels.
The room safe was not secured in room 727 so anybody could pick it up and walk out with it from the room. We therefore did not use it. I know that South Korea is a very safe country BUT why supply a room safe in a supposed 4 star hotel tourist focused hotel AND then not secure it?
The Exodus tour group check-in was slow but it was a Saturday late afternoon and the hotel was very busy.
The room was clean with full sized towels and a largish bathmat supplied. Neither unfortunately are a given in Korea.
Room heating was a typical constant 25 C even with the system turned off. This unfortunately is the norm for Korea come 01 October onwards. The window can be partly opened. The continental quilt is way too hot and we stripped out just the covers to use as a top sheet. The bottom sheets are barely bigger than the mattress base. Why again in a supposed 4 star hotel?
Only two free drinking water bottles were supplied even for the two night Exodus tour stay. Again not helpful to western travellers.
No sugar or dairy whitener is supplied in the room. This is a too common frustration in even other supposed 4 star Korean hotels.
There is a non freezer equipped, small room fridge. I have medicines that need to be kept at 2 - 4 C so freezing a gel pack for later day travel is important to me. There is no ice machine in the hotel but the front desk were able to take my gel pack to put in an office freezer overnight for me for my post hotel travel day. My Exodus tour guide helped facilitate this.
Fast easy to access, free in room wi-fi.
The bed was softer than many here in Korea. The 2 pillows / bed were firmer but appeared to each be in near air tight plastic bags = unwanted noise and sweaty.
There is a functional shower / bathroom.
A too large and too heavy footstool / seat is in the room. It also has very sharp edges. Why such an impractical furniture item?
The one suitcase raised stand / bench is too small to fit a large suitcase in. Why again? Who designs these supposed 4 star hotel rooms?
We could not turn off the ceiling down light in the room hallway so I had to cover it with black tape (that I carry). We also could not turn off the two lamps on the desk near the TV. So I took the bulbs out of these to sleep. There is a master power control switch BUT using it also turned off the wall power sockets near the beds; and we travel with 2 CPAP machines. Again not the world’s best room design.
The breakfast buffet was pleasing with the pre-cooked hot food actually mostly kept hygienically warm. This is very rare in Korea.
We ate in one evening at the small ground floor restaurant with pleasing and good value meals; but too many little annoyances here overall to rate the hotel higher than just 4 stars.

Room tip: Ask if they have any rooms not connected to the hotel's central heating. 25 C from 01 October is just too hot.
