I remembered The Sun House from a visit many years ago which is the reason for staying there this trip. It is a beautiful old colonial home set on a hill. Sadly over the years the place has fallen on hard times. Musty, smelly closets, stained bathrobes, a collection of creepy crawlies and lizards, a beautiful old rattan chair that collapsed into powdery remains under my weight. Our toilet flush stopped working on the first day and the plumber spread his tools out and spent a couple of hours trying to fix it. It didn't work. And he created a new leak which flooded the floor. They then changed our room.
The staff was well intentioned and helpful but the experience was rather like staying with a once well off friend, now fallen on hard times, living in dusty, shabby elegance.
We were also followed by one particular room boy all day who told us how low his wages are, how sad his life was, and pointedly hinted that he wanted tips.
I wouldn't return to The Sun House.

If you want to avoid a generic, corporate style hotel, this fits the bill. It is a comfortable, charming old colonial building, just right after the pace of Colombo. Galle centre is a short walk (or 1 minute by tuk tuk).  Although they do the usual touches, such as fresh flowers on the beds, what sets it apart are the young staff.  Friendly - but not intrusive, really knowledgeable about the local culture and their chef produced the best meal we’d had in Sri Lanka.  Don’t miss the cocktails or the wild monkeys in the grounds.  Really relaxing 3 night stay.

What a gem! Our first visit to Galle and the pictures of The Sun House quickly made our decision on where to stay - just so gorgeous! This charming hotel, once home to a cinnamon plantation owner, is perfect. On our arrival the wonderful staff immediately welcomed us and set the tone for our stay. We had two of the 8 available rooms - each with great character - and we all agreed it was a perfect place to stay. The Sun House is close to the Fort where of course much time was spent wandering the streets and with a tuk tuk ride costing just GBP1.50 the Heritage Zone was easy accessible. We liked being a little bit away from the hussle and bussle of the main tourist area. Upper Dickson Road is a hill in actual fact and as a result gives views over the surrounding area. We loved the verandah over-looking the pool and all agreed the curries were the best we had had whilst in Galle. Breakfast was delicious and the option of the Sri Lankan breakfast is a must - very yummy.
The real star of this hotel however is the staff. They were all, without exception, friendly, caring and very good at looking after you and making you feel so welcome. To come 'home' after a long day's sight-seeing to see such friendly faces was priceless.
The sitting room was wonderful - huge sofas, loads of books and a real kick-back and relax vibe. The courtyard with its frangipani tree was lovely and perfect for sitting with cocktails before supper.
Yes, there were one or two things wrong with the rooms - minor details - but to stay somewhere and feel so utterly at home negates such trivialities.
If we return to Galle, which we really hope to do, we would certainly stay at The Sun House once again.

Hotel in a beautiful villa on a hill 5 mins tuk tuk outside Galle Fort. Food excellent, both breakfast and dinner. Very stylish. Not super high end, but charming and elegant and much more character than a big hotel.
