I travel from Bangkok by Train to Hatyai, this hostel near with location. Just need 5 minutes walking, you will visit this hostel. It's suitable for backpakcer, they have nice internet, also have own kitchen.

Room Tip: Nice Location

Here's the facts...
- 300 baht/30mins by taxi from Hat Yai airport (prob could find cheaper outside elsewhere)
- Old and run down building
- Padlock's for each of the rooms as a means of locking your room, as I presume the keys for the actual doors don't work
- Right in the town so on the doorstep to food, cafes etc
- No elevator up 3 flights of stairs to get to reception if you're worried about that sort of thing
- Rock hard bed
- Asian style squat toilet
- stained room walls (of what I wouldn't like to think further!)
- Taps hardly work in the sink
- Wifi is painfully inconsistent and slow
- it's cheap (my cheap lunch earlier cost more than a night here)
- No English speaking staff between 0830-5.30 as per their sign at reception (Thankfully my girlfriend is Thai so wasn't an issue for us when we checked in at 8pm)
- You can buy drinks (soft and alcoholic) and basic snacks by the reception
- They sorted out transport to/from Koh Lipe and seem to have a whole range of transport options they can help you with and book

- Not the guesthouse's fault but the noise from bars etc outside was like a live show going on in your room so not a good spot if you want quiet or are a light sleeper.

Would we stay here again....NOT A CHANCE!
I've stayed all over Asia, and the world for that matter, and I've stayed in some nice and not so nice places.
Few make the list of 'would never stay here again' but this was top 5 for sure, maybe top 3!
Go with the facts above and make your own choice but don't expect anything but a run-down, unclean-looking guesthouse who can, however, arrange your onward transport!

For many years the Cathay has been 'the' backpacker, traveller, visa runner place in Had Yai to stay a day or two and swap gossip and the latest travel news when going or coming from Malaysia. It still is, but possibly not much longer. The guests used to be almost all westerners, but there are more and more budget travellers from the Indian sub-continent visiting the area and their different attitude to noise is causing friction. The staff and management are not to blame, but I expect the trend will continue. I do not plan to stay here again. My 'poor value' assessment only reflects this problem: prices have gone up but that is due to a general increase in the area.

The service is nice, there is in house restaurant, laundry, book exchange and travel agent, and location couldn't be better. But the room smelled terrible. Sheets and towels were clean and so was the toilet and floors so we never found out what was that smell. But it sure smelled like stuck sewer.

The hostel is retro style. Like those student dorms that were converted to youth hostels in Eastern Europe in 1990s. :)

This place is a complete rip off and not worth a single baht. The room and bathroom was very filthy and stank. The staff was more or less ok. There are tons of other guesthouses for the same price, go elsewhere.
