We stayed here for just one night, sad to say, after checking out early from our first location....no, don't even ask! We we thrilled to find that Riveredge had a channel facing room. We had seen the resort from Boldt Castle while we were touring. My husband asked..."Why didn't we book there?" "Bad reviews." I said. We hadn't checked into our first location yet, so we had no idea what we were in for. That's another review. Yes, it needs some renovating, but it is easy to see that it is a work in progress. I won't go into the room details that others here have...they are accurate, but as, I said, work in progress. The view was stunning and worth every penny, although we didn't find the rate that expensive for what you got in return. We ate at the Bistro...very good food, leisurely service, but we weren't going anywhere, so no issue. The standout thing for me, as a person who is very concerned about the environment, was the use of wall/shower mounted dispensers for soap, shampoo and conditioner. GENIUS! No waste, no little bottles to throw away. Not only good for the environment, but financially sound too. The only negative thing I found was a practice that puts the resort in a precarious position for lost revenue. Our server brought our bill that was printed on a receipt that allows one to fill in the name and room number and charge the meal to your room. What about dishonest people who make up the information? Our server never came back to the table, so I just left the signed receipt there. Ever hear of 'chew and screw'? We did get a call about 1/2 later asking if we had eaten downstairs, but by then, the damage would have been done. I did ask about this practice, but the clerk didn't understand that I was concerned for Riveredge, not myself. This needs to be looked at. We will be returning, but with our children, so that we can share this beautiful area with them.

Room Tip: Channel facing rooms are worth every penny!

The Riveredge Resort in Alexandria Bay, NY is a hotel with quite a history...not unusual for many places in this little resort town. It is, without question, the biggest hotel in town, and it's been "the" place to go for the privileged class for years...I've seen 100-foot yachts with Brazilian flags docked at the piers.

When you enter the lobby, it's impressive, and as you walk down the hall, there are eclectic displays of local art in glass display cases lining the walls. The impression of luxury is unavoidable.

Our room this time was a "channel-view king," and the view from the 3rd floor is truly beautiful...a panorama that includes the St. Lawrence river, Boldt castle, the Canadian coastline, and the occasional ocean-going ship steaming past purposefully, all of which can be enjoyed from a balcony outside the room.

Ah....the room.

Well, this IS a resort hotel in a resort town that probably quadruples its population during the summer tourist season, and as a result, ALL of the hotel properties in town get some hard use, and the Riveredge is no exception. While this hotel is one of the nicest in town, it still shows its age, and the maintenance is, shall we say, somewhat less than assiduous. In general, while our room was generally clean, it was also clear that Housekeeping never lifts their eyes to look at the ceiling...if old cobwebs with dessicated bugs and spiders bother you, you're in trouble.

Room decor is elegant but well-used...some remodeling wouldn't hurt. The TV was an old tube-type, but it worked well. The bed was adequately comfortable, and we were not disturbed by a lot of noise...but then, we were also outside the main tourist season, and the hotel was not even close to being full during our stay. My partner was put off by the condition of the bathroom...a little shabby, and complimentary shampoo/conditioner/bath soap comes in wall dispensers rather than individual containers/packages as in most hotels.

I had occasion to write down a phone number and found that, while there was a pen (attached by a chain to the small desk), there was no paper.

Amenities consist of an outdoor pool, a fitness center, free wi-fi, two included restaurants, concierge service, and a cocktail lounge. We ate at one of the restaurants and found the food to be quite good, if a bit pricey (in the usual hotel restaurant tradition), but not outrageously so.

To summarize, it's a decent hotel that gets hard use and shows it, but it's comfortable, and whether you like it comes down to personal standards of picky-ness. It's the best hotel in town...but Alexandria Bay is a very small town. It's not cheap to stay here, but as I said...it's the best hotel in town....a very small town.

Don't be afraid to stay here...just don't look too hard in the corners, or at the ceiling. Sit back and enjoy the spectacular view of the Thousand Islands and one of the cleanest rivers in the country.

Room Tip: "Channel-view" rooms are the most desirable...and also the most expensive. During tourist...

We just spent our yealry overnight stay in Alexandria Bay for a business meeting, and we made the mistake of staying at Riveredge Resort. We woukd normally stay at Capt Thompson's but since the party was at Riveredge decide to give it a try again. The rooms were priced over $160 a night, whivh isn't thta bad for a touris area, but what you do not expect is a room that has never been updated from the 80s. From the flower print wallpaper, distressed furniture, to the zenith rotary dial tv, this hotel screams renovation. Another major flaw is the employees. We were hard pressed to find an employee that was friendly and accomodating, especially the bartenders in the lounge.

Thank you for your review we are a Resort that is 22 years old and is starting to see the wear and tear. We are in the process of updating are rooms and so far have completed the rooms on the fourth floor and half of the third floor. We are also in the process of changing are TV's to Flat Screens and installing refrigerators. I must apologize if you received less than appropriate service in the lounge, I know there was a large group that was being very disturbing to the other guests and the bartenders were doing their best to control them. We do try to give the best service that we can. We look foward to the oppurtunity to serve you again.

We recently stayed at the Riveredge Resort for my daughters wedding this year. Overall, we had a good experience. We found the rooms very clean and the staff friendly. We did have an issue with our bathroom leaking into the floor below us and were continually reminded of the problem each time we took a shower. Finally, after 2 days they sent someone up to fix the grout so the tile wouldn't leak. We felt that they should have sent someone up immediately, but after returning home I contacted the hotel and let them know of our unhappiness. They were apologetic and accommodating. Sometimes the management just needs to be advised of problems, and they did make things good with us upon our return home. The food is generally good but the service is very slow. Be advised, that unless you book your wedding reception with this hotel, they will not allow you to reserve a block of rooms for your guests. As it stood, we had our reception elsewhere and occupied nearly a whole floor with our guests but were not given any special treatment for such a large group. The views from the hotel are exceptional, whether you are on the side of the castle or the town. All in all, it was a good stay and we did appreciate the cleanliness of the hotel room. I think they could have been more accommodating with the reservation allowances because of the large amount of people that booked here from our wedding. The staff is accomdating to your needs, you only need let them know. Rates are pretty expensive for what you actually get for a hotel room.

We stayed here one night because it was a spur of the moment trip and our first two choices were booked. Check in was easy as we had called ahead. They did inform us of a $25 charge if you lose a room key! The room was a descent size and did have a nice view of the water and Boldt Castle. The furnishings are dated and the carpet was very stained (do you want to go barefoot?). The best thing was the wi-fi. We paid $177 and had higher expectations. This is such a lovely location, but the whole hotel needs to be brought up to date.

This winter we will start installing new carpet in the rooms, we do have seven rooms that have new carpets already and we are looking foward to finishing the Resort in 2012. GOOD
Our room had a lovely view of the St Lawrence's main channel, and Boldt Castle. Comfy balcony for observing these from the outside, and a good-sized picture window for observing them from the inside. Five-minute walk to downtown Alex Bay was pleasant. The hotel staff was attentive to our needs.
The restaurant was very good--we ate there twice, and were VERY pleased both times.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
The hotel has a soundtrack. Music in the halls, talk radio in the elevators, music in the restaurant; worst of all, music OUTSIDE from 7am to 11pm. So loud & annoying you couldn't sit on the balcony & enjoy the scenery. So loud you couldn't sleep with the windows open, unless you want to wake up at 7am.
There was no list of restaurants in the room, or at the registration desk--not even a collection of menus..Just a half-sheet page of map that was printed so small you couldn't read the restaurant names. No list of local attractions. The cabinet holding the TV had a door that wouldn't stay closed--broken hinge, and a missing clasp. No notepaper in the desk, or apparently in the entire hotel--the chambermaid was only able to find notecards.
The "health club" (2 stair-steppers, a treadmill, and a NordicTrak) was only open from 9am to 9pm--I expected 7am-11pm. The indoor hot tub was too cold (99 degrees), and could not be adjusted. No in-hotel sundries shop.

Almost desperate by not finding a single restaurant on the 36 miles between Ogdensburg and Alexandria Bay, we were so happy to find this hotel and its beautiful terrace on the St. Lawrence, right in front of Boldt Castle.
Our waiter was very friendly and served us an excellent and perfectly presented turkey club sandwich and a fresh and not fat hamburger with the best French fries we had tasted so far on our 3 weeks trip through the eastern States

Thank you for your review about your lunch stay with us. We are glad that we were able to make your day and we hope that someday you can come stay with us so that we may serve you again. We do have a very lovely view of Boldt Castle and the St.Lawerence River and it is spectacular to see the ships go by.
