just returned from 11 days in tunisia at the riu palace hammamet maharba. The hotel is a platinum 5 star hotel and is well worth the rating. However, the number of children at the hotel running around everywhere is a definite put off. There was even a toddler riding a toy around the lounge are and also the dining room. Children running around the dining room whilst the parents carried on eating. Also be aware that at the weekends the hotel gives discounted rates to tunisians who also come with a lot of children.

This is not why we chose a 5 star hotel

All the staff are marvellous - always knew what you wanted to drink and were very attentive. The lady who cleaned our room - which was very large and overlooked the sea - was very nice and each
day we returned to see a different display on the bed.

The weather - which no one can control - was awful. Cold, windy and out of the holiday we managed 4 days when it was fit to be outside. We would definitely not return to this hotel.

Room Tip: ask for a high floor - although there are only 3 floors - the top floor appeared to be solely for th...

My wife and I booked this holiday 12 months in advance to coincide with my birthday at the end of January and glad we did.
Hotel on first impression was stunning, reception staff very friendly. After checking in we were given directions to our room on the second floor and were told that our bags would be brought up to us. On entering our room overlooking the main pool area and sea, we were very impressed indeed. Large, spacious and very clean. Flatscreen tv with a couple of english channels but on flicking through found two local film channels with english films and local subtitles.
Everywhere was spotless and kept that way throughout the day by cleaning staff. Bar area was good and spacious but dont ask for a larger and lime because you will get a glass of larger wths chopped up lemon pieces therein.
Food at all times was exceptional, in fact that there was too much choice. In the evening strict dress code for the men is in force which we think is a good thing. (keeps out the footy shirt brigade) A choice of half a dozen different bottles of wine to choose including a roast at the carvery every night. Was presented with a birthday cake at the dining table on my birthday (even though that we did not broadcast the fact) which was very nice gesture. Pool area was not usable due to the time of the year but would imagine that it is stunning at the height of the season - lots and lots of sunbeds available. Didnt like the look of the bungalows (seemed a bit dingy) and was glad that we didnt plump for one of those when booking. there is absolutely nothing to do outside of the hotel unless you get a taxi to either Hammamet or yasmin Hammamet which are a few miles away.
On the whole a very pleasant holiday for the time of year.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a sea view room

We where looking for a last minute 7 night break and came across this hotel. The price for 11 nights was only another £27. so we booked for the 11 nights. Had a good flight over no delays. Arrived at hotel and allocated a room on 2nd floor. Beautiful room but poor view, back to reception and changed to another room again on 2nd floor but with pool and sea view. Had a lovely time at this hotel (our 7th stay at a Riu) All staff from towel man, reception, dining room and bar were fantastic.(special mention to Ramzi and Yousehri in the bar) Always happy no sad faces anywhere. Plenty of choice in dining room. The animation staff also deserve a special mention. Always got time to chat, organised games during the day and shows at night. Thanks Shiva, Ricco, Koko Titi and Roma. Only one professional act though while we where there. There was a man playing on a keyboard in the bar(background music) several nights. Pleasant to listen too. At the price we paid no complaints and will certainly return.

Room Tip: All rooms in hotel where of a good size. Some had better views than others. Where some blocks of 2...

We booked a last minute deal with Thomson for a two week stay here commencing 8th February 2012, we got an absolute bargain which may be partly due to the weather here at this time of year, at times it had felt a bit cold but then we have had other days when the sun has shone and it has been warm enough to sunbathe, didn’t get warm enough to warrant a dip in the outdoor pool though!!

We arrived at lunch time on 8th February and were welcomed with our registration cards and a non-alcoholic drink, we were then allocated our rooms and sent on our way, our luggage arrived a couple of minutes after us. The reception area is spacious and luxurious and on arrival to the room (1214) we found it to be the same, a very large room, with a huge king-size bed, decent furnishings, plenty of storage space, a free electronic safe, minibar filled with water and a large flat screen tv. The bath room contained a bath with shower over, a large sink and vanity area and a huge walk in shower room, the toilet was separate. We had a fantastic view over to the mountains behind the hotel. We did move half way through the holiday as we fancied a sea view, the only difference between the two rooms was the shower was smaller in the sea view room, apart from that they were pretty identical. We did have a look at a bungalow, No 111, it was in a more traditional style but we preferred the rooms in the main building.

We went off for our first lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the food, drinks and service that we received and this continued throughout our stay. Wine and beer is served from individual bottles, which are left in an ice bucket by your table, all meals in the main restaurant are buffet style, the choice of food is vast, we were absolutely stunned to hear some people complaining at times about the food, and we could in no way understand why, we did not ever struggle to find anything to eat and the quality was outstanding. The waiters are all amazing, we were allocated table 109, where we ate every evening but you could sit anywhere during breakfast and lunch although we did tend to stay in this area as it was great to see the same staff every day. We had great fun chatting to the head waiter Mohammed Bouhouch. We did visit the Carthage restaurant during our stay, the starters and desserts are buffet style, but you are served either Salmon or Fillet steak for your main, we opted for the steak which was stunning, a word of warning though if you don’t like you steak rare or medium then you might be better not to try it.

The bar area is great, the only downside is that smoking is allowed, so we tended to sit near a door so that we could get fresh air each time it opened. There is waiter service, so no need to be going back and forth to the bar, two waiters to mention are Majdi and Mohamed, they worked so hard and we had a good laugh with them. The drinks are of the local variety and are measured, some people felt that they seemed watered down but my personal view was that they were just small measures with a reasonable amount of mixer added, the mixers are all very good makes, they even had Schweppes tonic. During this time of year there were no bars open outdoors but they did come out during the days serving drinks.

The facilities here are great, there is a fantastic gym that my husband used on many occasions, a small indoor pool which we only visited once, we felt the Jacuzzi by the poolside was a bit too cool to spend any length of time in. Downstairs there is a sauna, hammam, and some pool and table tennis tables, we didn’t use these during our stay. There are two pools outside which looked lovely but were far to chilly to use in February, and also a tennis court, again we didn’t use this but it looked to be in good condition.

They have an animation team who organise various day time activities and also night time entertainment, and although we got to know them we didn’t generally take part as we prefer to amuse ourselves whilst away, from what other people said the shows at night were a bit hit and miss.

The rooms and all public areas are absolutely immaculate, the staff seem to be cleaning constantly, and there was maintenance work taking place during our stay, we saw rooms being repainted, they were polishing the wood on the bannisters around the atrium etc, it would appear that the management are keen to keep this place looking stunning, which is just great.

It was very easy to walk out to the beach here and head either north to Hammament or south to Yasmine, you could also walk out of the front of the hotel and wander to the main road (about 10 mins) to catch a local bus. The taxis are very cheap and plentiful, and they use meters so no worries about being ripped off. We did book a couple of trips through Thomson and thoroughly enjoyed them both, we felt they were good value for money and it was great to learn more about this fascinating country.

At the weekends the hotel did tend to get busier with some locals staying overnight on Saturdays and on our second weekend there was a conference which did cause a few noise and dining issues, but the management are keen to ensure that these problems do not occur again and will be taking measures to ensure that the dining areas etc do not get too busy by allocating time slots etc.

Our rep Mark was brilliant, really informative. helpful and approachable, he seems as passionate about Tunisia as the local staff are, a great asset to Thomson and this hotel.

The hotel as I’ve said is stunning, the facilities amazing and of course the dining and drinks are great but what really sets this place apart from other hotels is their staff, they are quite simply AMAZING. They are all so happy and helpful, nothing is ever too much trouble and when time allows they are happy to chat to you, they work like Trojans to keep everyone happy and constantly ask if there is anything they can do to improve your stay, they are an absolute credit to this hotel and also to Tunisia. We did tip, in fact we spent more on tips than anything else, but the staff are so worthy of the money. We cannot wait to come back to this hotel and would have no hesitation in recommending people to come here.

Room Tip: We preferred the rooms in the main building, but felt that the bungalow rooms would be great during...

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Although the weather was not warm, we had some sunny spells and made the most of it. Hotel has lovely gardens and is set right on a sandy beach. We had some pleasant walks along the shore but did not go out of the complex at the front, because there was nothing to walk to. There was plenty to do indoors, indoor swimmng pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym and there were also daytime activities if you wanted to take part. Evening entertainment was simple but enjoyable. The food in the buffet restaurant was tasty, fresh,of good quality and there was a good choice. It was different every day with show cooking stations. The waiters were attentive and if you tip the waiters and the bar staff they appreciate it and look after you. A mixture of international guests made it very cosmpolitan. We had a seaview room which was very comfortable and spacious. No coffee/tea making facility. But we think we might return another year.

Room Tip: Both seaview rooms and mountain view rooms were good.Nice view from both. Both had the same faciliti...

I am writing this post whilst waiting for my transfer for my return journey to the UK. Date of holiday, 05/2/12 - 15/02/12

First I have to mention the Thomson Flight, the seats are far too close together. I was seated 1 row behind the centre escape door where 1 seat was unoccupied. I was sat with a couple and a child so as you would imagine, we were a little crowded. As I have said, the outside seat at the escape route was unoccupied so when a flight attendant was passing, I asked if I could have that seat. I explained the situation in regard to the child with the couple and that it was a squeeze. I was told firmly, “these seats are for people who have paid extra”. Imagine my thoughts when the lady in the centre seat of the row took her hand luggage from the overhead compartment and placed it on that vacant seat for the duration of the flight and not 1 flight attendant said a word to her. Shame on you Thomson for the lack of customer service.

The review of this Hotel: On arrival I was quickly processed and my luggage sent to my room which was large with a bed that could sleep 3 adults. (I was solo, honest). The bathroom has a bath plus walk in shower which was great and the whole room had been cleaned to a high standard. This remained the case throughout my stay. The food severed in the restaurant was of good choice and wholesome. I personally was treated like a rock star, this is because I like to tip, normally, I give £5 which is a lot of money as a tip to a Tunisian. Whilst people waited in line for afternoon pancakes, I ask a waiter to get some for me, I asked bar staff to take bottles of wine to my room which they all did with a smile.

The weather is not currently good but you always receive a sunny smile from all the hotel staff. I am so impressed with this Riu Hotel, I am going to book Cape Verde Riu on my return to the UK. If you want a bargain now, before the summer holidays commence, come to this hotel without hesitation. HAVE A GREAT TIME.
