“What A Pleasant Surprise”
Reviewed 6 April 2012

Having read some of the previous reviews we wondered if we had made the right decision.
We found the actual hotel bright and cheery and the bedroom was first class and cleaned on a daily basis to a very high standard with plenty of hot water and fresh towels daily. Bottled water was given freely from the bars.

The restaurant was pleasant with the service from the staff very good, the food was varied with lots of choice with something for everyone, although it did change at week-ends when the locals arrived then it became a little manic to say the least.

A real plus at this hotel is the dine around option that they offer which gives you the opportunity to visit four other Ibostar hotels in the area and enjoy an Al La Carte evening meal and if you are there for two weeks it is possible to enjoy five meals out with drinks included as part of the all inclusive deal - a real bonus.

The hotel director can often be seen joining other guests at the hotel in the dining room and sharing their table in the hope I presume of obtaining feedback but he is very selective were he sits and seems to like the company of females which is fine, but I am sure he would get a more general feel of how the hotel was performing if he circulated more with a wider range of guests, but maybe he doesn’t want to get indigestion!

One downside is the smoking, the area used for the animation in the evening was thick with smoke. Although the dining room and reception is non smoking the reception could do with more and better seating because both bars are smoking areas.

With regards to a tipping culture at this hotel we did not find this in fact all the staff we found to be polite courteous and most helpful and a credit to the hotel and fully deserved any tips we gave them.

The situation of the hotel was ideal for us as you can walk to the port along the promenade about 20 min each way.

Be mindful that certain weekends of the year the hotels can be taken over by locals due to special deals being offered by the hotel. Two weeks in March was their spring holiday weeks.

In short nice hotel, pleasant staff, and a very nice holiday, would I go back yes.

This hotel should not be a four star maybe a three.
Food was okay
Waiters and bar staff were good
Clean towels and bed linen were available on request.
Room was dusty and some days it was not cleaned till mid afternoon
Mini market was a pain as we were getting hastle from the traders i know this is Tunisian culture but you are not wanting this grief within the actual hotel grounds.
The beach was closed for the winter but even going for a walk you had to watch where you were putting your feet as it was filthy

We arrived at the hotel & was lead into a room to fill out a form & had to wait till 2pm for our room (worst part waiting) we had lunch & our room was ready. We requested a ground floor & was given 4th floor they changed it within minutes no problems. Our room was very clean no faults at all a queen sized bed very comfortable & plenty of bedding. The room was cleaned daily we had clean towels every day. The maid was nice I left my watch & rings 1 day (forgot to put them in the safe) when we returned he had placed them around a bottle with rose petals bless so nice. We also left a tip for 3 days running & he never once touched it we waited to hand it to him & he was very happy.

The food every day was good something different every day for 2 weeks I had one day where I didn't fancy anything (that was me not the food) the worst was we went on the Tunisian school holidays & they was silly when it come to filling up there plates but they never once ran out of food.Breakfast you got fresh omelettes or fried eggs done how you liked. The salad bar lunch time & evening was good different every day chips pizza most days if you wanted them. In the afternoon they served pizza spaghetti Bloglines & the best pancakes ever. At night after tea they would bring out cakes & sandwiches but i will say if you wanted them be quick as they went very fast. we had them one night as after being in for tea we didn't want anything else. We went to the Asian in our hotel I personally wouldn't recommend it but its each & everyone to there own taste some people like it some didn't. The waiters looked after you they would try & reserve you the same table every day they was polite smart & clean.

The bar service was very good the all inc was 10am till midnight in the 1 bar then you could move to the other bar that closed at 1am but still all inc. The waiters remembered our drinks so we didn't have to ask they just brought them over. We met with people where most nights there was 8-10 on one table & the waiter remembered everyone's drink right down to little vodka diet coke to apple vodka diet coke amazing. The drinks was yes local but they was drinkable & yes we got drunk a few nights hahaha.

Entertainment about 11am there was shuffle board, ping pong (table tennis) archery, darts & bowls mini golf stretching classes something for all. then again in the afternoon plus funny games they was funny but good. the entertainment at night was OK but not fantastic but they tried there best they had competitions that involved the crowd not just silly dance shows. The staff worked hard & thanks to all the entertainment staff for involving us all we love you all.

The pool was freezing I went in it 5 times over 2 weeks mad I know but its very clean. My concern is around the pool they serve drinks in glasses rather than plastic I didn't like that as they was getting broke. They will give plastic if asked I found out after other than that no complaints.

My one main concern is the lack of public toilets around the hotel there was only 3 as the pool toilets wasn't open for the size of the hotel that was bad (I mentioned it to the Thomas cook rep).

All in all we had great company great entertainment good food good service we carnt knock this holiday in any way what so ever so please take note this hotel is good we will be returning.

We travelled with Thomas Cook and had a good flight and no problems, will use them again. On arrival at the hotel we were asked to fill in a registration form then wait as the rooms were not ready. This was not a problem as a gin and tonic was in order anyway. When the room was ready someone came to tell us. Our room was really spacious and spotlessly clean (many thanks to our cleaner).Clean sheets and towels daily. The cleaners are very hard working. When we went for lunch we were very impressed with the food choice. There was a large selection of salad and various types of bread, there was a pizza selection every day as well as fish in some form or other every day. The food was healthy , local and plentiful. Our room was above the quiet pool and that is where we spent most of our time as the large pool was more crowded and family oriented. The animation team are just fantastic and especially Ricardo. Iberostar are very lucky to have him. He included everyone and made them feel really comfortable. The children loved him and we never once saw him without a huge smile on his face. I saw Ricardo on his day off dancing with a little girl on the dance floor that was on her own and he made her evening. The area around the hotel is a little run down as is most everywhere in Tunisia, this is not a secret and you shouldn't be surprised when you go there. As for the people we found the majority of them to be friendly, it is also no secret that you will get hassled when you go to this country , it is their culture if you don't like that then go to Spain.Yasmine Madina was great fun and the marina is beautiful to walk round. You will get stopped but be polite and say no thankyou and you will be left alone. Hammermet is a very busy city but well worth a visit and the old fort is lovely. The same applies just be polite and say no. The bus into Hammermet leaves from right outside the hotel and is easy to use, the conductors both ways spoke English. This was an all round really great holiday. Thank you to the staff at the hotel that go out of there way to make sure you're holiday is the best. If you want value for money then you will get it it bucket loads here, The hotel might not be 5 star but all the staff will make you feel that way. If you expect more then pay for it. Ricardo you are an absolute star and this hotel is really lucky to have you work for them xx

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the quiet pool xx

This holiday was better than we expected in every way. We even paid more than some people but still thought we got more than our moneys worth.

The weather was amazing! there was only one overcast day but we still had a brilliant day, there's a nice choice of excursions to choose from or you could just make your own entertainment.

The staff were brilliant, waiters and entertainment team in particular. The bar staff could be a bit miserable but it didn't effect us too much. The reception staff could also be quite rude and sulky but we barely dealt with them anyway. On a better note the waiters at meal times were fantastic, couldn't do enough for you but were never cheeky about expecting a tip. The entertainment team were fantastic, particularly Ricardo, you can't not like him, he was brilliant at his job and became a good friend by the end of the holiday.

The food was brilliant, there was a great range of different things at each meal and even day to day. Definitely something for everyone and it was always hot and fresh. I don't know what else people expect for the money you pay.

The actual hotel and rooms were amazing, very clean, the shower was really good and the maids would leave nice little decorative surprises every now and again, which was a nice touch after a day out. We never had any problems with things going missing.

The outdoor bits were also brilliant, we didn't really use the quiet pool much but our balcony was looking out onto it and it was always peaceful and quiet. The main pool was FREEZING, way too cold, not many people went for a regular swim but kids still loved the shallow parts. There were always plenty of sun loungers and we always got our favourite spot. Even though we were right near the busy door way, it was never a major disturbance and there was a nice atmosphere.

If you aren't interested in going on any trips you need to make it known to them on the first few days. There were 2 or 3 of the same guys always hanging round ready to ask you but once you'd given them a firm but polite no there was never any more bother.

Last of all, the best part of the trip was actually the company. We met some great friends there, 2 couples in particular that we would have loved to have stayed in touch with. As well as lots of other people that we chatted with at times and they were always great fun.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the quiet pool were nice and quiet and the balcony got a good bit of sun, even lat...

We have just come back and i have to say i feel some of the reviews on here are unfair.
We was a family of 5 and we all enjoyed it. In and around the hotel was clean. And we always had clean towels and sheets every day. The staff was always friendly and well presented and most cant do enough for you. The food was ok but not a great deal of choice. One thing i would say when you first arrive you get harrased by the locals trying to sell you boat trips, quad biking e.t.c all you have to do is keep saying no and they soon get the hint.
If you dont like or are allergic cats this really is not the place for you as there are cats and kittens everywhere. People are also allowed to smoke everywhere and it can get over bearing if you dont smoke.
The beach was lovely, very clean and tidy but there was not alot going on around there as went out of season, i think if you went in the summer it would be buzzing. Again you get the local trying to sell you things but just say no and they leave. Be warned if you take photos of the horses or camels walking on the beach the person with them will ask if you want a photo with them. then when they take it they wont give you the camera back until you have paid them.
As i said earlier we had a gret time and get what you pay for. I would reccomend it.

Just returned from this hotel after a weeks hols here,
Its okay if you smoke as its every where, even in the reception areas.
If the weather is poor and you want to stay inside, find a place that you can get some
fresh air because there is not to much inside very smoky atmosphere.
Beware of going to any markets in Nabul on trips 2 ladies had been muged on 2 seperate
occasions at this market, no proper warnings given by reps. (not very good Thomas cook).
Don't mind the hastle from traders got used to it, the only good thing we can say is that the special restaraunt deal was very good food.
The food in the hotel was not that good our friend had food poisen from bad fish from here was ill for 2 days beware!!!!!!...

Room Tip: Get high floor sun facing.
