“Old style, in need of renovation”
Reviewed 19 February 2012

The Hasdrubal in Port El Kantaoui is clearly in need of some renovation, it shows that furniture, carpets, bathrooms have been used intensively and are not that recent anymore. Staff is very friendly though. Breakfast can be improved as well, large choice, but the looks and quality of some items is weird (e.g. strawberry jam that looks brown, almost black, ...). The room was very cold, the only heating element was extremely noisy.

We stayed at the Hasdrubal, Port El Kantaoui from 12-15 Dec 2011. The hotel had very few guests and most nights we were the only diners in the al a carte restaurant. The location is perfect for walking to Port El Kantaoui and the gardens surrounding the hotel are just beautiful. The buffet breakfast had plenty of choice and was the only time we saw other guests. Free internet was a bonus and the gift shop has some lovely things.
The concierge arranged a driver with a car for us so we could see what we wanted during our stay. The driver was so good, we kept him on for the remainder of our time in Tunisia, even after we let this hotel!
The only downside was that the hotel decor and restaurants felt out-dated. Probably would've been perfect if we were in our fifties or sixties!

I travelled with work to this hotel which we used as our base whilst doing some fieldwork in the nearby area. As I was with work it meant we were leaving the hotel at 730 am every day and not getting back until after 530pm in the evening, which meant I wasn´t able to fully appreciate the hotels facilities, but I had a very positive experience despite that.

We were there at the end of November, not exactly peak season and the hotel was quite empty. However despite this there was a full buffet and selection of dinners provided every evening. Dinner was very good and the service was very old fashioned, silver dome plate covers came on the main courses and all the waiters would come round our table to reveal our dinners! Breakfast was ok, and the omelette bar was a nice touch. All the staff I encountered were friendly and professional.

I had a room on the 4th floor right at the end of the corridor, and despite wifi being available in the rooms, it didn´t quite reach that far and I had to go to the lobby to use it. Also if there was air conditioning it didn´t work very well, and I could pull open my window when it was supposedly locked, but this wasn´t a major issue as the rooms had safes and there were also bars on the window.

The room itself was very spacious and comfortable. A selection of fresh fruit was made available when I arrived and replaced after three days. The beds were comfortable and made daily.

On the one afternoon where we finished a little earlier, I had the chance to walk through the gardens and onto the beach. The hotel pool and garden areas are well kept and rather lovely, and the indoor pool would have been perfect had I time to enjoy it! Port El Kantaoui seems much quieter than nearby Sousse and if I was taking my vacation in Tunisia, I would definitely prefer this location.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the bar would be preferable, some of my colleagues said that the music in t...

The lobby is always too warm ,the service in the restaurants is poor and most importantly The staff including the manager of the hotel require serious training in their ability to communicate with guests, some of the reception staff and the manager certainly do not know how to speak or communicate respectfully to guests when addroptions a problem .instead of giving options or solutions they creat insurmountable obstacles and instead of requesting or asking they tend to give orders (extremely unprofessional).

Located just a few hundred metres from Port El Kantanoui is the Hotel Hasdrubal – one of several large hotels in the area. The first impressions were positive as the light aroma of jasmine and citrus pervades throughout the reception. After the reception manager explained the procedures for breakfast and dinner, I then asked for the possibility to get wireless access for my laptop. This service was free and within minutes I had a secure access to the Internet.

With half board, the drinks are not provided at dinner but are reasonably priced. A good bottle of red wine costs 13 Euros, with cheaper ones around 11 Euros and the most expensive being 17.5 Euros. Diners may choose from around 7 different main dishes and a very wide variety of starters that are available at the buffet. Vegetarians are also well catered for. Friday evening dinner should not be missed as there is an excellent Tunisian buffet with many traditional dishes such as couscous and roasted lamb (mechoui). This is accompanied by traditional Tunisian music and a belly-dancer…

The waiters are well trained and very friendly. The room was very good and quiet. It helps that we were located on the side facing the pool and beach. The other side might be noisy at times due to the water-treatment facilities but maybe they are turned off at nights.

A small golf practicing course is available as well as several tennis courts, a volley-ball court and table-tennis facilities. The outside pool was very clean with a sizeable children’s pool annexed to it. A covered heated pool, filled with sea water (31° C) with bubble bath is also available. The hotel also has a Thalassa centre, but we did not use any of the facilities.

Our stay was during the first week of September and the last week of Ramadan and this might explain why the clientele seemed more of the mature type. It is quite possible that during other periods there are more lively activities, but during our stay it was very calm – but exactly what we were looking for. Overall, we were very pleased with the hotel and although it is only a 4 star hotel, it is better than some others advertised as 5 stars.

We have stayed at the resort before 'pre baby' and have always loved the great weather, food and friendly people. Every year you return and everyone remembers you and comes over for a hug!!

We stayed at Hasdrubal Thalassa with our 22 month old this time and although there are lots of stairs we managed them with the buggy as the pool and beach are too good to miss. There is a large block of appartments being built at the moment but it doesn't take away the fact this is a lovely place to stay. The rooms are spacious and we payed for a cot which was kept as clean as the rest of our room. The wine and fruit is a lovely touch to welcolm guests aswell.

The food is great and we stayed full board with having the little person with us and they made special pasta dishes for her when she didn't fancy what was on the menu. The variety is great and quality very high. The spa does play a big part of the hotel but there is no pressure to book treatments but is nice for a treat!

We wouldn't stay anywhere else in Tunisia - as the old saying goes 'if it aint broken don't try to fix it!' We have a wonderful time even though it is quiet at evenings, that's just what we like
