“Rumkale Fortress, Another Magnificent Wonder Along the Euphrates River”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2012

Rumkale is an absolute must see along the Euphrates river. It is only accessible from the village of Kasaba (Gaziantep side) by boat or from Halfeti (Sanliurfa side)by boat. We took a wonderful boat trip from Halfeti along the Euphrates river. Although it is possible to stop at Rumkale and see parts of it, it was getting late and we still had to go to Savasan village so we just circled around this magnificent fortress. We took the boat trip by Siyah Gul (Black Rose) boats from Halfeti and look for Captain Yasin Erdogan, an enterprising young man with a very friendly and charming personality. This was a private boat tour.
Getting back to Rumkalesi, this is a fortress which was originally built by the Assyrians about 800 BC, but later developed by the Romans, Byzantines, Armenians, Memluks, and finally the Turks. This place is like the cradle of civilisation, with so many empires occupying it.
After the waters of Euphrates have risen at these points about 30-40 meters by the construction of the Birecik dam, Rum Kalesi (Rum Fortress) is basically only accessible from the magnificent river either from Halfeti or from Kasaba. Next time I visit this place (I fell in love with Halfeti and River Euphrates), I will make sure to land at this fortress and examine it from inside. A visit to Halfeti and a boat trip along the Euphrates with a stopover at Rum Fortress, and Kasaba and Savasan villages is a must see and do for any visitor travelling throughout Southeastern Turkey. (Gaziantep and Sanlurfa areas). You will have unforgettable memories of this trip.
