“Watch Out !”
Reviewed 28 September 2011

A Turk kindly called the hotel from the bus station for me and obtained a quote of 49TL. When I arrived about an hour later, I was told 50 Euro by the manager - more than double ! Clearly the desk clerk who had quoted early was embarrassed. The room, when I saw it was pokey. Needless to say I decided not to stay.

We stayed here for two nights in April 2011. Great cost and location. It's located right opposite the tomb of Shams Tabrez, the mentor of Mevlana Rumi. It is also located close to the Alaettin Mosque, the oldest mosque in Konya.

Had a great time, very comfortable rooms, friendly helpful staff and great breakfast with a large dining hall. Highly recommended.

This hotel has an excellent location next to a small peaceful park with the tomb of Sems al Tabrizi, the Mevlana Rumi's mentor and an excellent hamam. It is close to the mevlana Museum and also to the main city centre of modern Konya and bus links to Sille.

Staff are very correct and perfectly helful and polite.

You have to leave the shower on for 5-10 minutes before the water runs warm. Staff told us this would happen and they were right.

The double bed we had was actually two singles put together, not unusual in Turkey, which can lead to somebody sleeping in the crack down the middle. The morning call to prayer is close by and very insistent so get to bed early when staying here.

I stayed at this hotel for two nights right at the beginning of Ramazan (Ramadan), and chose it ahead of the nearby Hotel Rumi due to Ani and Sems's better location and cheaper rate. In hindsight, I should have just gone to Hotel Rumi! Ani and Sems is situated halfway between Alaadin and Mevlani Museum, and I was quoted €35 a night in a fairly spacious twin room. Rumi was charging €50, but was much nicer and had hot water!

The hotel itself is ok - staff are good (reservation by phone in English was no problem at all, and you can pay by credit card when checking out). There's free in-room wi-fi, or you can use the internet terminal in the reception. There's also a lift, good air-con and there's a supermarket right next door to the hotel so everything's quite handy. Best of all is its handy location to the main street, tram stop and bazaar at Konya.

However, I had major problems with hot water on both nights of my stay there. The first night, I was given a room on the top floor - as I had requested - and the hot water took ages to come through the taps. I thought it had something to do with the water pressure, so tried every single room that was waiting to be cleaned the next morning on every other floor to investigate whether that was unique to my room or not, and found they all had the same problem of having no hot water. So, bear that in mind if you stay here.

Also, if you stay on the lower-floors - as I did on the second night - you can hear the noise out on the street below (there's also a park there), and also the receptionist typing away on the keyboard or talk on the phone which can be quite annoying.

The breakfast was quite really poor as well, and TV reception was virtually non-existent.

In short, got to Hotel Rumi is possible...it's much nicer but a little bit further to Alaadin and, as a result the main shopping drag but it's bang next door to the Mevlani Museum!

Ani and Sems is a 2 Star Hotel in the centre of Konya. The location is one of the hotel's greatest selling points as it's mid way between the Aladdin's Hill and the Mevlana Museum which are the the two biggest landmarks in the city. It's also a couple of blocks back from the main drag (Mevlana Caddesi) which means that it's pretty quiet.

Staff were friendly to us throughout our stay and the service level seemed considerably higher than would be expected for a 2 Star. This was also the case at breakfast where the buffet was one of the best we tucked into on a long road trip across Turkey. The biggest plus for us - a family traveling with 2 small kids - was the size of the rooms. Not glamourous, but everything we wanted.

Definitely recommended for a simple, unpretentious, value-for-money option.
