Hotel Grand Samarkand

Too many chairs, suitcase-stand blocking the window & one of the beds, almost inaccessible fridge, wardrobe so narrow the door wouldn't close unless you turned the coathangers sideways - and the switches! These controlled the lights & power-points but as they were labelled in Japanese we never managed to sort them out. We didn't have dinner in the hotel, only breakfast. The dining room was small & noisy when full & though there was plenty of choice for breakfast many dishes would have been better served hot.

Room Tip: Many rooms overlook the pleasant courtyard.

There are two sister hotels on opposite sides of the street. The rooms in the Hotel Grand Samarkand are very small and claustrophobic. They are set around a pretty courtyard where you can have coffee, tea and other drinks and food and snacks. Breakfast is very good with a great choice and all very fresh with helpful and friendly staff. The WiFi was really good as well. The Hotel Grand Samarkand is well away from any tourist sights so a car/taxi is essential.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel closer to the centre of Samarkand.

Arrived too early to check in which was no problem and the reception called us a taxi. When we got into the room it was large and clean. There was no bottled water which was a surprise. We used the duvet which was available. The following day the bed spread and pillow case covers were missing or damage and the duvet was on the bed. Noticed there was a very detailed inventory of charges in the case of anything missing. We were then accused of taking the pillowcases ( which weren't even my taste!) and the receptionist pointed to the cost which we were expected to pay. I told her they were not in the room on the second day. My partner spoke to her in Russian as her English was not brilliant and she refused to answer. Instead she asked the taxi driver ( who we had engaged- not the hotel) to translate - with no knowledge of his command of English. Eventually she telephoned someone else who confirmed they had been taken away. She did at least apologise. On the plus side of the hotel the water was very hot and plentiful. There was no plug but as a traveller I always carry one. The breakfast was satisfactory - no more. Nice garden to,sit in and have a drink.

IA small hotel in a quiet location . I had a single room which was small but comfortable .The staff were helpful and friendly and the food was good . One drawback was that the wi-fi only worked in the hotel lobby .

Room Tip: Upper floors are best

This looks a very modest hotel tucked into a quiet street just off major streets. It is modest. It's unpretentious. It's even quaint to some eyes- but everything works. My room opened over a very pleasant central courtyard and could have been noisy had people stayed up late out there, but our small tour group retired tired and early. The pillows were very large and rather hard and it could be difficult for some to climb into the high bath, but the vanity mirror and hair dryer were well placed (unlike the previous hotel in Samarkand!). Breakfast buffet was good, particularly for a small hotel like this. I can't comment on value for money because our tour is all inclusive, but I'd certainly keep this hotel in mind for pleasant accommodation.

The hotel is clean with average location and good service. The hotel is not close to Registan Square or other tourist attractions. It has a small and quaint courtyard. The bed was by far the most comfortable I had sleep in in Uzbekistan. However, there was limited choices for breakfast and there were flies near the food.

It might not strike you as luxe at first, but it's one of the finest in Samarkand, and the staff are world-class helpful. Local brides come here to have their photos taken because they consider it the most elegant place in town.
