This restaurant brand is easily found in Nagoya because of its famous miso sauce. We ordered 2 sets of meal, the one I selected is to have a pork chop on hot pan, a waiter provided me a towel for self coverage while he was pouring the miso sauce on the pork chop.

The deep fried pork chop is in good quality, which is good matching with the miso sauce. You could ask for extra rice when you finished your on hand, I recommend to put sesame on the rice since it can enhance the tasting in different level.

Little bit too expensive for katsu, but they offer most meals made of black pork. Katsu can be considered as kind of schnitzel of Japan (... I know..). This is meant to be as a fast food food. Restaurant is somehow fancy, but also resembles the western Chinese restaurants in some way. Nonetheless, the food is good and they serve with Nagoya miso sauce. Nagoya miso sauce is more sweeter than ordinary miso sauce, but I think it goes well with dried foods.

The restaurant is located on the 10th floor, on the right side, in front of the lift (elevator). They offer also English menu, which comes, as the Japanese menu, with pictures as well. But there seem to be huge differences between the English and Japanese menu. Since the English menu with pictures serves basically just as transcription, I recommend to look for the pics in the Japanese menu.
The staff was nice (do I need to even mention this in Japan?!). For two means, we paid roughly 3000Yen. It was katsu menu with rice, miso soup, salad and tea was free.

Yabaton is as good as it gets for miso katsu, a specialty of Nagoya. No complaints on the quality of the tonkatsu. Choose the loin cuts for extra juiciness as compared to fillets. The sauce itself was definitely distinct, strong miso taste that goes well with the tonkatsu (unless you do not like miso/soybean products).

We arrived at the restaurant around 3 pm, no need to wait for long to get inside. We ordered just 2 sets of dishes because we don't expect to eat too much, but the dishes are so good and very tasty, finally have to order one more set. It was really delicious! Recommended to try if you visit Nagoya!

Yabaton is an institution and a tourist attraction in Nagoya.

Unfortunately, it does not live up to the hype. I've had way better Tonkatsu (try for example Agezuki in Kagurazaka in Tokyo for a completely different level). The fat inside tonkatsu should dissolve and turn the meat juicy and tender. Here the fat was rubbery and the meat hard and chewy. It has either to do with the quality of the meat or the lack of technique in cooking it. Or both.

The miso tare poured over here was sweet and had a bit of the nice miso umami to it. But no real depth to it. It is clearly precooked in a factory kitchen somewhere and then transported to every branch of the restaurant.

There is better tonkatsu out there. Just do a bit of research, and you'll find it in no time.
