Maze is a village deep in rural Gifu prefecture which many Japanese people don't even know about... so this is an absolutely incredible chance to visit to get a slice of life in the Japanese countryside.
Dai is a young guy who relocated from Tokyo in 2017 to promote tourism in the area and has launched this tour. He's able to adapt the tour to your interests and we really felt his passion for his work come through.
We drank clear, fresh water from a well used in making local sake; we had an incredible lunch made with locally sourced ingredients, including ayu fish from the river and wild mountain vegetables; we got a bonus insight into a local fishery, with a lady explaining how she raises the fish to be released into the river;... and we got FRESHLY GROUND COFFEE ON A SECRET RIVER BEACH (tea drinkers don't worry - there was tea and sweets too). Sitting by the river, surrounded by trees with the sound of the water... this was a perfect way to wind down the tour - although, of course, we had to cycle back.
The e-bikes are very easy to use and make very steep hills seem flat. I felt overall I would have liked a bit more context about the area, the local industries and livelihoods, but Dai is more than happy to answer questions.
Cannot wait to take the longer tour next time I have a chance to visit the area.
