I wrote on travel for the Huffington Post for 5 years, and of the 100 countries I've visited, this tour stands out. First of all, you're a genius for choosing this off-the-beaten-path part of Japan, and secondly Dai is a genius for the quality of service he gives. My highlight was hearing a fabulous Shamisen player (traditional Japanese guitar) at our lunch spot, and drinking in the fabulous aesthetic of an unspoiled country community that feels lost in time. Highly recommended.

Dear David,

Thanks for joining in the e-bike tour and great honor to get the review from the Huffington Post travel writer.

You were very lucky to hear the Shamisen but afterward the lady told me that she was also pleased to play it for you.
We are customizing a new tour to enjoy the traditional Japanese music.

Hope to see you again!

Warm Regards,
Dai

Maze is a village deep in rural Gifu prefecture which many Japanese people don't even know about... so this is an absolutely incredible chance to visit to get a slice of life in the Japanese countryside.

Dai is a young guy who relocated from Tokyo in 2017 to promote tourism in the area and has launched this tour. He's able to adapt the tour to your interests and we really felt his passion for his work come through.

We drank clear, fresh water from a well used in making local sake; we had an incredible lunch made with locally sourced ingredients, including ayu fish from the river and wild mountain vegetables; we got a bonus insight into a local fishery, with a lady explaining how she raises the fish to be released into the river;... and we got FRESHLY GROUND COFFEE ON A SECRET RIVER BEACH (tea drinkers don't worry - there was tea and sweets too). Sitting by the river, surrounded by trees with the sound of the water... this was a perfect way to wind down the tour - although, of course, we had to cycle back.

The e-bikes are very easy to use and make very steep hills seem flat. I felt overall I would have liked a bit more context about the area, the local industries and livelihoods, but Dai is more than happy to answer questions.

Cannot wait to take the longer tour next time I have a chance to visit the area.

Dear Phoebe,

Thank you so much for your supreme review!

First of all, I really appreciate you found and contacted me through the social media for booking.
Sorry for the inconvenience, but you gladly chose another tour nevertheless Takayama E-bike Tour was not available on that date.

I am deeply honored to guide you around Maze, all of you guys are friendly and nice people.
Hope you visit here again and try the fabulous meal at the ryokan next time.

Thanks again!

Warm Regards,
Dai

Our family of four booked at a stay at a ryokan in Maze, the next valley over from Gero, Hida-Takayama, and the Hida train line to Toyama. Our host set us up with tour leader Dai, a super smart, thoughtful, and creative college grad who relocated from Tokyo last year to promote eco-tourism in the area. He took my wife, my two adolescent sons, and I on a great tour of the valley on e-bikes (all Japanese, he said proudly) that took us to mountain views, shrines, a great lunch with an impromptu classical Japanese music concert, and the highlight, coffee on a beach on a secluded bend of the Maze river. Dai speaks excellent English and had really interesting things to say about the area, the people, his own life, and Japan itself. I learned a lot and so did the rest of my family. He runs these tours from any of the nearby train stations in Takayama or Gero, and was super open to requests and connections to friends handling other activities in the area.

He made some great suggestions about visiting Furukaya to see some of the venues depicted in the movie Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name), which my kids (and I) love and serves as a great primer to understand the teen mind and life in Japan today.

Overall I would highly recommend Dai's approach to creating meaningful experiences in this underappreciated part of rural Japan.

Dear Bill

Thank you very much for your great review! Your family is really warm and friendly so I also had a special time.
I am so glad you enjoyed the tour itself and Maze village this time, especially coffee time at the private riverside beach.

Nice to hear that you seemed to visit Hida Furukawa too. All experience you had in Japan will be the greatest memory of your family.
We will make another activity and always welcome your visit here. Hope to see you again in the near future!

Warm Regards,
Dai
