You could walk to Yamakyu from Takayama Station which would probably take 15-20 mins however if (like us) you had plenty of luggage a taxi from the station cost about 800 yen for an 8min trip. Having arrived prior to the check in time the proprietor was more than happy to provide maps and suggestions and even allowed us to use two of their bicycles to explore Takayama free of charge which is highly recommended. Upon our return our bags were stored in our small room which did however contain it's own sink and toilet. The kaiseki dinner was good and enjoyed with the other guests in a dining hall, as to was the breakfast. There is also a small public bath downstairs which was great after a day bike riding! The only criticism is the smoke. Smoking is allowed through the ryokan and even though we were in a non-smoking room, by the morning our room reeked from all the smoke rising into our room on the first floor. Great service however and the owner even dropped us off a the station the next morning.

We stayed 2 nights at Yamakyu and we had a great time in there. Its position is perfect, not in the centre of the town but close a beautiful walk through magnificent temples. Our room was small but clean and warm. The entire ryokan is well furbished and the bathrooms are new and so relaxing.
People are kind and gentle. A perfect place to have relax and peace of mind.
I kindly suggest this place in takayama to everone!

Having travelled to Takayama from Hakone (about 5 hours by train) we arrived to the middle of nowhere, in the dark, with no email confirmation that we would be collected as arranged by the Yamakyu staff. I'm not going to lie, I was slightly apprehensive..

I needn't have worried! Even after our, rare, 20 minute train delay, and that we arrived around 8pm in the rain, a memeber of the hotel staff was still there waiting to pick us up. This was a nice, and fully appreciated touch.

The hotel was only about a 10 minute drive from the station and we were given a little tour as we drove past places of interest. We then arrived not knowing what to expect, and was surprised to find the place was much bigger than expected! And quite a few travellers as well.

Although we were late, we went and had dinner. This dinner was a feast! I will try and upload pictures as soon as I get around to putting them on the net, but trust me, this was one of the best meals we had in Japan. It was very japanese but did offer fish and shabu-shabu (beef dish cooked in a broth). I did find it quite difficult to eat on the floor though, but when in Japan right.. The breakfast however was not so great, but that may be down to me not wanting fish at 8 am! I would also recommend dinner for all the nights of your stay as finding a place to eat was really not easy to do. We ended up eating noodles bought from the Family Mart on our second night.

Overall, the room was adequate for what we needed and was very traditional. There was aircon / heater and a keylock safe. The public baths were nice and relaxing and a few memebers of the staff spoke very good english. As Takayama is quite small, the location was also pretty good.

We even, although reluctantly, managed to get ourselves a lift down to the station on the day we left. They didn't seem to please to do it, but are too polite to say no!

If you want a piece of traditional Japan, stay here!

We stayed in Yamakyu for 3 nights, and it was excellent!!! Like what everyone has said, their meal is a must try. The dinner was wodnerful, with a good spread of varies small dishes and superb! To try an authentic traditional japanese meal, Yamakyu is the place. The room iwas warm and cosy in the cold weather of Takayama.
The minshukuu's staff are very nice and polite..it makes you feel like you are truly staying in a japanese house...

I hope our experience was typical-phoned ahead to confirm arrival and met at Bus terminal and driven to Yamakyu.
Room ready with tea/nibbles/blanket and heater under table- very cosy in winter. Futons made up later with electric foot warmers-another cosy touch.
Room-fairly standard size, but excellent storage and views in 2 directions over garden/Takayama city and beyond.
Excellent Kaseki style dinner (in Dining Room, not Bedroom), with local specialities. Excellent breakfast also-Japanese style only-OK by us.
Great location, quiet, elevated.
Excellent English spoken.
Loved- location, service, food, baths.
Disliked-nothing really.
Value-outstanding if you take a room without a bath- Japanese baths excellent so save and use them.
