This well run hotel stands on the hillside about a mile outside the city. A regular shuttle bus service is available into town and although this stops quite early in the evening, taxis from the station cost between £6 & £10. Whilst the hotel looks rather bland from outside, the hotel inside is completely different, especially the communal areas and the views of the city and surrounding mountains are spectacular. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped. There's a choice of restaurants and cafes and the bar is a traditional tatami room on the spa floor at prices slightly lower than in the main restaurants. The buffet dinners offered good food with plenty of choice and the very attentive staff looked after my wife with her gluten intolerance very well (advised to the hotel in advance). The buffet breakfasts offered plenty of choice and the food was good, although there were no specific gluten free options here. The city is exceptionally pretty, very accessible and more traditional than many of the larger Japanese cities. We were here specifically for the ancient once-a-year River Festival and were lucky with the weather (one drop of rain cancels the parade!) as this proved to be a highlight of our Japan tour - amazing.

Room Tip: Higher rooms offer best views

The hotel is located on top of a hill, a bit far from the main area of Takayama, but what it lacks in accessibility it more than makes up for in great views, large rooms, wonderful onsen and delicious food. The hotel also provides a free shuttle service to/from Takayama Station, about a 10-min drive away.

It's a fairly large hotel, and there were many tour groups during our stay. Despite the large number of people, staff were very delightful, food was of great quality, and the hotel did not feel overly crowded. Rooms were around 35sqm, with large bathroom and bathtub. But the highlight was definitely the many different onsen you could try!

Hotel has free wifi, but being located on top of a hill in a high elevation area, connection was not always so good. Their connection guide even mentioned something along the lines of "Please stay closer to the window if you cannot get a signal." But we didn't choose the hotel for the wifi, we chose it for the onsen, so this was not a big problem for us.

Stayed one night while on my tour to the Japanese Alps. Had both dinner and breakfast at the hotel. The Hida beef was superb but nothing like Kobe beef. The buffet breakfast was amply provided with both Japanese and some western spread. I loved the soft boiled Japanese egg. The room n bathroom was large for a Japanese hotel. Tea n coffee making facilities provided and the bed, towels and room was clean. Wifi in the room was strong at certain corner. The hotel has a spa at the level 6. Staff were extremely superb n polite. Can stay again

Hotel Associa is about a ten minute taxi ride out of town. The lobby is elegant, spacious and the staff are welcoming. We enjoyed our large room with two double beds (duvets) and good bedside lighting. Our large picture window looked out on the mountains.

Two easy chairs and a floor lamp afforded comfortable reading; no English channels available on TV. The room had a large dresser with plenty of drawers for clothing.

The bathroom had adequate counter space for toiletries, a deep tub and shower plus a pull cord near shower head to secure at opposite end of shower for any laundry you might do.

The closet had enough hangars; the safe is also located there. There was a coffee and tea set-up plus an empty refrigerator.

Room Tip: Ask for a room from which you can see the mountains and far enough up to afford a good view.
