Ryokan Asunaro is a lovely traditional Japanese Inn located just a short distance from the train station, restaurant and nightlife area, as well as the heart of Old Takayama – so the location is excellent!

When we made our reservation, several months in advance, the place was almost fully booked (obviously it’s popular). Ergo, we reluctantly took a room with the ‘shared shower’ option. Our worries of any potential difficulties were unfounded however, since there was a toilet and sink in the room – and getting access to the communal shower was very straightforward.

When we first arrived, we were bowled over by the amazing traditional fireplace situated in the main entrance, along with all the fabulous furnishings and artifacts scattered throughout the lobby area. It was part museum, part art gallery, part hotel – a delightful combination! We also loved impressive range of Yukata’s for us to choose from and wear, during our stay.

This place dates back almost 150 years and has been passed on through the family for generations. As such, you can sense the tremendous pride the owners feel for this establishment. It’s reflected in the excellent service they extended to us. This included driving us to the station upon our departure – at no extra charge, if you can imagine!

Unfortunately we didn’t get an opportunity to dine at this Ryokan, but the dining room looked very inviting and I’m fully confident the food would have been to the same high standard of everything else we experienced here.

All in all, we were very pleased with our choice to stay at this particular Ryokan and would heartily endorse it to anyone planning to stay in the Takayama area, in the future.

Room Tip: If you prefer a shower in your room, book early - but don't let it be a knock-out factor (not that inconvenient really).

Ryokan asunaro is conveniently located in Takayama. The staff speak English very well and make a good effort in accommodating foreign tourists. The ryokan is beautiful, clean and well taken after. Would also highly recommend the dining options (if you like Japanese food). Breakfast is also very good. Definitely recommended for anyone visiting Takayama.

We so loved our ryokan stay from the moment we arrived - and wish we could have stayed longer. Everything was perfect and we were treated like honoured guests. The traditional rooms were spacious and well fitted out. The breakfast (we only had the western option) was amazing and the service gracious and prompt - the coffee was excellent too. We loved the onsen experience and wished we had stayed in ryokans for our whole trip.
The staff were friendly and accommodating, the location was good - absolutely nothing to fault.
We had a toddler and they went out of the way to accommodate her and us. I would recommend this place to anyone.

A lovely traditional ryokan in Takayama. Very clean room, nice staff, good service.
Have hot spring facility in hotel which is very quiet and paceful.
Breakfast is included. Good quality.
The room is big and suitable for 2 adault + 1 child. Child will be charged 1080yen/per night if he just share everything with his parents.
Walking distance to the Takayama station, 10 min walking distrance to the old town area. A convenient place for tourists.

We were over the moon with the fantastic service, wonderful facilities and the gorgeous rooms. The traditional rooms are well kept, clean and very comfortable with lots of space. The staff go well above and beyond to make your stay amazing and are always happy to be a help in enjoying your time. We fell in love the beauty of the old building and were amazed at the level they maintained it.
The traditional kaiseki meal is unbelievable and well worth the price. After a wonderful dinner enjoy the quaint serenity of their in house onsen.
