Walking distance away from the famous Matsumoto Castle and the old quarter of city where many F&B outlets are! Convenient for tourist for night out eating and drinking. The room is relatively small but clean and comfortable. Hotel's English speaking receptionists also help. Decent Japanese breakfast...like most business or budget hotels in minor cities in Japan, it is decent but nothing to shout about...
Ask for non-smoking room on non-smoking floor, if you are sensitive to secondhand smoke!

Room Tip: Non-smoking room on non-smoking floor and on higher floor for better view!

As my title says, this is a good mid-price hotel in a great location. Less than five minutes from the iconic Matsumoto Castle and nestled in between quaint shopping streets Nakamachi & Nawate.

Hotel Kagetsu is a clean and comfortable business hotel.

We stayed at this property for 4 nights in the older annex section of the hotel. The room was very small with extra firm beds. The unit was more like a budget accommodation. However, these features were offset by the excellent friendly English speaking staff, the location to restaurants in the older section of the city and bus/train station, the great extensive Japanese breakfast included in our stay, and self coin laundry at the hotel. There was also a public bath available that we didn't use. It was a great value overall. If you like outdoor activities, we stayed at Matsumoto so we could take day trips to Kamikochi and the Nakasendo Route (Magome to Tsumago) hiking. The tourist information office was a two minute walk from our hotel.

Room Tip: Request a room in the newer part of hotel.

This is a good place to stay and is very convenient in the samarui former residential area. We stayed in a western room with very comfortable beds. Good onsen bath available but also ensuite is good.
Some tips for foreigners. We could not adjust the air conditioning and it was too hot. But opening the window worked in the season we were there. Point both handles inwards and swing the window open.
The western breakfast arrangements have you served at the table. When they offer you a choice of eggs or not it is probably better to say yes or you may not get much. But it is tasty!

This hotel is close to the castle, has a great public area, great breakfast, and helpful staff. The single thing missing that truly changed our perception of the hotel was an extreme lack of ventilation/air conditioning. While I realize that this sounds like an overly picky complaint, the summer heat in Matsumoto truly kept us awake due to the heat in the room. With all of this nice hotel's modernity, this one missing element made our stay here not a very pleasant one.
