“Interesting reconstruction of Castle gate complex”

Kofu City History Park
Reviewed November 24, 2016

This little reconstructed gate house and entrance complex is well worth a visit between Kofu station and the little local crafts shopping centre beyond. It is one of the entrances to the main Kofu castle but it has been detached from the main site by virtue of the decision to build a railway line through the castle between the two.

It consists of a sympathetically reconstructed gatehouse with displays inside covering the archaeological investigation and consequent reconstruction, and exhibiting artefacts recovered from the site. The impressive ramparts illustrate the defensive features of the original entrance. Given its convenient location and limited scale it is a very rewarding investment in time!

It is just in front of the north entrance of Kofu station. You will know that this gate of castle in the north of the station and the stone foundation of the castle just in the south of the station were both the parts of the same fortress built more than 400 years ago though they are now separated by railways. We may imagine Takeda family as the ruler of the region in the middle age, but this fortress were built by Tokugawa regime after the fall of Takeda family. The fortress was once abandoned around 140 years ago after the termination of Tokugawa regime and only some part of stone foundations has remained in the south of Kofu station. Recently a northern gate building has been restored in this park based on the data obtained from historical documents or by excavation and we can see the excellent technique of traditional architecture for castle construction. They have a small museum in the upper floor of the gate building in which such history of the fortress and the records of reconstruction are exhibited. This upper floor is also a good view point for the whole area of the fortress and Kofu station.
