Took me a while to find this place as with many jap address. Got help from a local and the restaurant is at B2 of Sun Plaza. Basic restaurant..press for ticket off the vending machine. Had a hot soba with the "gabo"(fried burdock fritters and 1 prawn tempura ¥500 and the cold soba veg tempura ¥620 This was recommended by the only English speaking staff/owner. The soba is unique and hand made.

This little restaurant isn't really that hard to find if you have looked at a map and walk thru the underground passageway from Hakata station toward Gion. It's on the left thru a pair of glass doors leading to several other Japanese restaurants of various stripes. We too were a bit baffled by the ordering system which is based on a series of drawings outside the restaurant. If you don't read Japanese you're toast, but the proprietor, a young man who speaks some English as well as French and bits of other languages quickly came to our aid. He suggested having cold udon with vegetable tempura as well udon in beef stock with their signature fried burdock. That was sound advice and we enjoyed both the udon and its preparation which we could observe from the counter. The food is good, the prices are in the $5 to $8 range, and the vibe is entertaining--sort of reminiscent of Cheers in its heyday. You won't go wrong eating like a local.

I wanted to go to this restaurant for lunch, but the waiting line was too long and just gave it up. Finally I discovered that it is not so much crowded for dinner time and had a chance to eat its legendary noodle. You first buy the ticket (inexpensive! in general between $5 and $10), hand it over and wait. They make your noodle soup after you place the order, so you have to wait more than 10 minutes; it is unusual in Japan. To my surprise, Kakiage fritter is huge. I understood why this restaurant is so popular.

Hard to find but worth the getting lost underneath the station for this place. No English menu - you have to pick from the pictures outside - and then purchase tickets from the vending machine!! But food is great quality and staff are super friendly. Lots of great vegetarian options too - in fact the restaurants 'special' is vegetarian tempura and it was yummy!

A very busy udon noodle shop in the basement of a building across from Hakata Station. Most of regular customers eat their crispy gobo-ten tempura noodle either in cold or hot. Very delicious.
