“Best way to visit Sakurajima”

Sakurajima Island View
Reviewed August 25, 2017

Use bus day pass or Kagoshima day or two day pass to visit several spots in Sakurajima Island. Short stops for an overview and than, later, pick where to stay longer.

I took this tour in May 2017. I was there late, in the day and I guess the bus pictured in the advertisement wasn't available. Instead they've put there a rickety city bus. That was disappointing. Look at my photos. The trip near volcano is an interesting experience. No, it's not a trip *around* the volcano but rather on the southern slope of it but still it's pretty cool. You don't get to the edge of the crater but with a decent camera you can zoom in and see the jagged edge of the "business end".
The bus takes around an hour, to make a complete tour. There are stoops on the way and you'll have 5-10 minutes to take decent photos at vista points. The final stop is around 20 minutes and you can walk up to the viewing platform/structure.
Nice views on the bay and the slope of the volcano. That area is covered with volcanic ash. Sakurajima is an active volcano, which spews out clouds of smoke and ash every day. Not a massive amount but you can see it. I took photos of that material on the ground. One of them shows my hand covered with this black stuff. It's everywhere, in that area. Overall - a $5 trip with cool view of a volcano.
You can see it free if you have a "CUTE" Kagoshima pass. You can buy it at a train station and other places. A 2-day pass is around $15 and it's good for city trams and buses, City View Buses, a Sakurajima Ferry and this volcano tour bus.
Word of advice - take your time on this tour. Go in the morning, or at noon.
Take pictures at the stops but don't rush back at the last stop. Let the bus go and wait for the next one. It'll be back in an hour. Take your time at the last stop and you'll have a chance to enjoy the views and take good photos. Use a tripod to stabilize a zoom. The distant/zoom photos are good there but you won't be able to capture them without a tripod, specially if you're in a hurry.

If your low on time and or money this is for you. Beware, it can be crowded and rushed. They do provide additional buses when needed.

The bus departure stop is right down the ferry terminal on the island. U won't miss it. The bus runs along one side of the island n takes about an hour with about 8 stops. The driver will wait for 5-10 min in 3 vista points so that u can take photos n come back to continue the ride. U can also hop on n off in all the stops. Just that the bus is usually departs once every hour from the terminal (when tourists are really many, the interval may shorten), so make sure u check the time for next coming bus when u get off the bus.

We got off in the second stop which is the hotel in the island. There is also a waterfront park n we had a really nice walk along it. The best is there is a free fee bath there, it's very nice to soak your feet n relax n enjoy the view of the volcano from the far side.

I recommend this bus ride if u don't drive or u are going to spend a whole day in the island.

We went on a Wednesday morning in November and really enjoyed the ride, the view, and the three short stops. Personnel at starting point went out of their way to insure visitors got on correct bus. Driver was well organized and posted departure time during the stops. The bus with 12 passengers was over half full. On a weekend or during summer afternoon one can imagine it could be packed. Afterward we walked from Ferry Terminal to Dinosaur Park and to the Welcome center.
