Stayed here for one night while touring Beppu. Paid around Y25,000 for a half board ryokan here for 2 pax. This ryokan is about 10-15 minutes walk from the Beppu station, and the building is pretty old. There's less than 10 rooms in the whole building, and close to 6-10 staff working in the ryokan, meaning that close to 1 staff to 1 room ratio.
Service was pretty good. Each time we exited the room, there would be at least one staff who would be stationed at the level to greet us and press the lift for us. Dinner there was also wonder, with a full course meal as expected from a ryokan, comprising of many dishes including the appetizer, soup, main course and dessert. Breakfast though was pretty varied was a little too Japanese for my liking. Nearby is the famous Takegawara onsen, which one can experience the sand bath for Y1,000.
On the negative side, the ryokan is pretty old, with the look and feel of the building showing. The rooms smells of age, and the onsen is pretty small and poorly lit.
Overall, I must say that this ryokan is not the most modern or coolest of ryokans, but the staff here do put in their best to make guests feel welcome and appreciated.More
