Owner description: Constructed in the 1600s, this castle was originally named Otakasaka after the hill on which it resides. Built to defend the city below, the structure was partially damaged by a fire in the early 1700s but never faced a formal attack.

Great remaining original castle. Steep stairs/ladders up but gorgeous cooling breezes captured inside. Beautiful in Sakura season.

Never get old. You can walk up to the castle as well as do a walk around the park area to take in all of the geometric shaping and beauty.

The Kochi Castle has ancient construction and has gone through renovations along its history. The main keep is well preserved and is a nice piece of woodwork. In February, the Ume (plum) flowers blossom in the castle grounds.

It's now a great castle but is is well preserved. I think it has not be rebuilt recently. A nice walk in the grounds and up to the base of the castle tower. You get the feeling of what the old warriors had to go through. Then a nice view from the top.

We were lucky to have the castle practically to ourselves. It seemed smaller than Osaka castle, the only other Japanese castle we’ve been to, but it had more in it to look at such as models of what the castle would have looked like in its heyday. The stairs inside are quite steep, I found it easier to come down backwards, particularly in just socks which are more slippy. There’s a good view of Kochi from the top. Worth a visit if you’re nearby.
