“Very Historical ”
Review of Portuguese Church

Portuguese Church
Reviewed September 3, 2018 via mobile

This small but imposing church is certainly historical. Our driver stopped by this on the way to the beach. I found it interesting that the locals embrace much of their colonial heritage. Worth a visit just to touch base on how old things are here.

A must see stop when taking a Tuk Tuk tour of Malindi together with other historical buildings and sites.

I love that they have preserved this little gem! It may not be very big, but the fact that has stood for so many centuries is quite impressive.

Built by the Portuguese Catholics 1498 in what was then and continues to be a Muslim dominated area, St. Francis Xavier buried two of his sailors here who had died at sea.

My guide, who walked with me from the Malindi Museum, was quite knowledge about its history, and clearly pointed out the parts of the structure that were recent additions vs. the original construction. (Obviously the palm thatched roof needs to be replaced frequently...)

It’s worth a stop and see if you are in the area, but don’t go to Malindi expressly for this small building, LOL!

This church was built by the Portuguese in the 15th Century. It's small and quaint, with a thatched roof but the smell inside was very overpowering. Interesting graveyard.
