“Old charmer”
Reviewed 19 April 2012

There were 6 of us staying in 3 rooms ; outside the rooms was our "own little private" fireplace with sofas & a coffee table. Had an excellent time, sipping wine and chatting over a fire at night. A great way to rekindle old friendships !

The hotel is definitely NOT your typical 3-4 star hotel BUT what it lacked in "modern" decor, it more than made up in character and service. If you are looking for a relaxing environment, nice gardens, good service and some "old charm" then this is the place to stay for a night or two. The bathrooms could be a little bit more "upmarket" but overall it was acceptable.

The gardens are also superb to walk around after a nice & robust "english breakfast" (don't miss the homemade jam) in the morning. Make sure you bring your camera with you as you walk around !

“Gorgeous Hotel in the Cameron Highlands”
Reviewed 9 April 2012

I stayed at the Smokehouse in early April 2012. The hotel is beautiful, and the rooms quite charming. The gardens were every bit as beautiful as I had imagined. The staff were friendly, and even packed me a lunch on the day I departed. I would love to see more options for breakfast though.

“Great Lunch”
Reviewed 9 April 2012

Went to the Smokehouse to have tea & scones, however we were hungry and decided to get late lunch instead. We ordered Cod & Chips, Steak & Mushroom Pie and Chicken Maryland and a set of scones for one.

The Cod & Chips though about RM60 is very very good. Portions is good, you can go to any restaurant in KL and they will not serve you cod fish this size with this price.

Steak & Mushroom Pie is very traditional English, it was lovely, the mash is plain awesome.

Chicken Maryland the portion is huge! Really loved the fried banana fritter on top.

Scones however was a let down, very dry, not buttery at all.

Will definitely go back for the Cod & Chips but never for scones.

“Overrated but worth just the one visit”
Reviewed 3 April 2012

Meet Bob at the bar who is friendly. The place is excellent but now overrated and they also have too many restrictions like entering the place unless you are a patron. Cheapest beer is RM14 per glass which is more than KL hotel prices. Food is expensive and I didn't eat there so no comment. The flowers and deco is to die for though. Nice English pub like setting for those with a wad (of cash) to blow. Worth checking out, once.

“Classic English Tea in Malaysia”
Reviewed 29 March 2012

I love the surrounding garden, sitting there for late afternoon tea is the best way to enjoy it. Its not a very big place so if you meet a family with young children; then you just have to enjoy it another way :-) but its a charming little place that you usually read in books describing the English country side.
Food is good, not really great value but they need to pay for the upkeep of the garden don't they?
If you like to walk, this is a great place to end your walk. There are numerous tracks around the area ranging from 30 mins to over 2 hours. Maps are available from hotels and tourism offices.
