I always believe charcoal makes the food flavorful. This place uses charcoal to heat up the steamboat. And don't worry, small copper chimney is provided to cover you from smoke and occasional spark.

The orders are simple, just counted by number of plates you've taken. The plate usually have ingredients like prawns, fish ball, slices of pork, and mushroom.

This is one of the recommended shop by my friend that stayed at Penang during their uni time. Goh Huat Seng is an old school restaurant in Penang, Malaysia that specializes in hot pot steamboat. The place having good food and classic environment. Why classic???

Because they used charcoal for boiling the hot pot!

Goh Huat Seng Steamboat is on the same street as Kimberley Street Famous Koay Chiap. It is one of Penang's oldest Teochew restaurants, has been in operation for more that few decades. The specialty is steamboat here is heated over charcoal.

We ordered vegetable, fried chilli pork, thai sauce chicken and homemade tofu. Nice lunch. Tofu and vegetable were tasty. Enjoyed the thai sauce chicken. However found the chili pork a tat too salty and oily in seasoning. The soya bean drink is refreshing. Overall i would say it is well cooked.

Brilliant way of enjoying the whole eating experience by cooking it all yourself in a charcoal steamboat on the table! Good food and good fun!

They offer a set menu with a stock that brews as you cook your selection of meats from squid to liver to chicken, and dim sung and other tasty traditional Asian treats.

Once you have eaten all the different food the broth left over is naturally delicious, but don't be shy about adding the extra fried garlic, trust me it's a good addition.

It's 50Ringit for a couple, and with water and Chinese tea it came to 60. But the more people you have , the more food they give you and it gets more economical but at that price, you can't go wrong!

Definitely an experience worth trying during your trip to Georgetown, Penang!
