When my friend and I arrived at Moontree 47, we were instantly blown away by it's relaxed atmosphere (especially the cats). The owner, Kent, is probably the friendliest man i met in Malaysia, and i still miss him!
The rooms were filled with personality and style, as well as having all the basic amenities needed.
The location is also excellent, situated in Georgetown, it offers plenty of places to see within walking distance. Kent will also hook you up with a map to check out the area.
Will gladly return to Penang again and book the same hotel.

In the old town, this charming place offers stylish rooms and a nice backyard - perfect for chillling. This is a ideal spot to go and discover George Town. Plus, the kindness and the tips of the host make this hostel even more special.

I have just returned home after a week's stay at Moontree 47. My friends and I came to Penang for a wedding, and although my friends stayed at a big hotel around the corner, I wanted something less western. And it's exactly what I was looking for.

Kent, the owner, from the 1st booking email was helpful and friendly. He arranged airport pick up, nothing seemed too much trouble through the email conversation.

On arrival I was given a map and a phone with a prepayed sim card, in it were essential emergency contact numbers. I have traveled for years, and nowhere have I come accross this, it was just what the solo traveller in a new country needed. I was also offered a bike to hire for free during my stay.

On the first eve I was given a double room with shared bathroom on the terrace. The room had air con and a fan, fresh water and towels, and hot and cold wanter in the quirky shower on the terrace.

As arranged, on the second evening untill the end of my stay I was given an en suite room. This was situated at the back, through the cafe and courtyard. The two floor room was great, again there was brilliant air con, fan, water, towels and mosquito net. The room was immaculately clean. The shower, basin, toilet and table and 2 chairs was situated on the balcony that were acced up through quite steep stairs/ladder. Once used a few times it became easier to maneuver!!

The price does not include breakfast, but Moontree does have a cafe that serves brrakfast and snacks at a very reasonable rate. The food was tasty and they serve the best homemade juiced apple drink. Note the cafe is closed on Wednesdays. My first morning was a Wednesday and found there was no breakfast option, but just down the road there are plenty of places to eat.

The location is brilliant for going out and about in Georgetown, close to restraunts, cafes, bars and local places to visit. Love lane (turn right at the top of the street) is a great chilled place to have coffee at night and listen to some guitar playing or some jazz. And close by is chulia st, great for evening drinks and party music. Camera museum is next door and the blue mansion just near by.

Moontree is 100% safe for solo travellers, it's cheap, clean, quaint and certainly not your 'average' B&B experience.

If you are looking for any sort of luxury, this is not the place for you. If you want friendly and welcoming and a traditional 'old fashioned' and quite 'arty' homestay experience then you would love it!

Highly recomended.
Thank you Kent.

Kent the host couldn't be more friendly and helpful but the other staff aren't much of either. Breakfast isn't very good and isn't included in the price, rooms are atmospheric but no noise protection from neighbours (walls don't reach the ceiling). Good location.
