“Above all else, Convenience”
Reviewed 18 March 2012

The Superior Triple room configuration was lovely, one queen bed and another single and at 23 sq m it was spacious enough for the 3 of us as compared with their other standard single or double rooms which were very much smaller.

What I liked most about Cititel Express in KK is that it is located right smack in the heart of the city & yet is only about 10 mins from the airport. How about that for convenience? It sits in a commercial area called Asia City where there are many shops, offices, restaurants and also smaller eateries all around.

KK has a beautiful seafront and from the hotel it's just about a 5-minute walk to the esplanade where many local & western restaurants spring to life as night falls. And a short distance after these trendy restaurants is the much-talked-about but nothing-to-shout-about Filipino market, which is an open air hawker square selling mostly grilled seafood.

The highly strategic & centralized location of this hotel makes everything within easy reach, and this more than makes up for its other shortfalls. I will definitely recommend Cititel Express to anyone coming to KK because above all else it's the convenience that any traveller would cherish most so as to maximize on his holidays.

Hey, you didn't come here for the hotel. You came to KK for a whole lot of other stuff! This hotel is right in the middle of KK - within walking distance of the nite markets and dozens of restaurants. (Massage places very close by also!) Take a taxi if your going to the jetty otherwise its a 20+ minute in the hot sun! Seems like a very safe place. Security room card needed for elevator access also. One of the few hotels where the window opens slightly. (I don't know why you'd want to open the window tho and let all the heat in) Floor 12 has mini-fridge each room. complementary water. Book online and get free wifi. Walls somewhat thin but one bang on the wall will let your neighbor know that you can hear them. Lots of worldly travellers stay here. All of them polite. Most everybody speaks some english. Staff attentive. Helped out booking some tours. Upgraded our room.

Room Tip: Nice view if sunny - can see the south china sea if on that side of the hotel. Not all rooms have m...

Price
Very reasonable.

Location
The city is pretty small so almost everywhere is walkable, or just flag down a taxi at the entrance for RM10-20. Alot of eateries, must try the Bak Ku Teh next to the hotel. Theres many nearby banks too.

Accommodation
First night, we stayed at the double room, its really really small so we upgraded ourselves to twin beds on the 2nd day, must bigger but no windows.
The last 2 days we upgraded again to triple rooms with connecting rooms (there's 6 of us), its super comfy and spacious!Great sea view and worth every penny.
The bathroom is very clean and spacious too. A/C is great!
Will definitely book the same hotel again.

Food
Dont eat at the cafe, try the local food, cheap and good.

Whats best?
The room of course. Look at the pixs. :)

Room Tip: get the triple room, its super comfy, high floor and sea view!

Was there between 10th - 12th Feb, and again 13-14th Feb

Location - Hotel is stragetically located. Stone's throw to many shopping mall such as CentrePoint which is just across, Asiacity and many others.

5 minutes walk to Esplanade, Sedco seafood restaurants. There are 4 outlets there.
10 mins to Fillippino, central, wet markets & night market. Please take note that there are many setup stalls located next to Fillippino markets at night. The seafood are fresh catch of the day. We had Giant prawns, Fish & sotong & 2 fresh coconut juice. Cost us R$54
15 minutes walk to Gaya Street where sunday market are being held in the morning.

Surrounded the area are many eateries.
The chicken wing located wihin 2 minutes walk from the left side of the hotel is to die for. As there are about 4 stalls selling similiar food, look out for the stall located next to the road.
Yee Fung Sarawak Laksa located at Gaya Street is simply delicious. It's always packed even at 10+ in the morning.
Seafood at Sedco - We had White pepper crabs, veg, prawns & geoduck + 2 bottles of tiger beer and fruit juice. It only cost R$80

Staff - They are cheerful, friendly & helpful. No professional smile.

Room - They are small, but shower room are spacious enough without you having to bang your bum against the tile. We booked the room with Agoda. And for $5 more, we have the room that faces the seaview. They are tidy and clean with basic necessities. Do bring your own toiletries though. It's worth paying the extra $5.

We intend to go back again as the lst trip we had were too short a time for us to explore around. We were exhausted after climbing Mt Kinabaru when we came back.

Room Tip: Choose the room at number 01 or 02 as they are located nearer to the exit and water dispenser. They...

Was stay at here for the 2nd time. The room is quite small but clean. It's ideal for a short stay or business trip. The location is just ok. No worry to look for foods as there a quite a few or coffee shops around there. But I'm quite disappointed with their breakfast menu. The fried rice was over fried and hard. No cereal foods, milk, and fresh juice available. Only Coffee, tea and syrup available at the drink's corner. Beside, they didn't provide mineral water and iron board inside the room. But there is an amenities corner available at every level so you can refill your water and iron your clothes at there.

Anyway, If you're looking for a simple & nice hotel with a budget price, this could be your choice.

We have been visiting KK for 10 years but this was to be our first stay in a hotel that is not located on the beach. As we were staying for a week, we booked the studio - a stylish, comfortable and well equipped apartment on the top floor. It became our home from home very quickly! The hotel's central location made it easy to walk to most of our favourite places in the city. The reception team kindly helped us to arrange car hire for a few days. Staff were great and VERY helpful. Breakfasts were good. Wi-fi signal was good too.
The hotel was busy and clearly enjoys a high occupancy rate. Many of the guests we spoke to were regulars. After such an enjoyable week there, I suspect that we will become regulars too.

Room Tip: The studio (room 1202) is perfect for a longer stay.

I have traveled to KK several times--sometimes on my way to other places, but regardless of the destination, an overnight stay in KK is always warranted. KK has a beautiful waterfront and is a great place to recover when traveling on a long trip to another destination. Cititel Express has a great location in walking distance to the Waterfront and City Center, shopping, money changers, restaurants, and any other services you need from the downtown area of KK. The rooms are clean but can be quite small. However, I have stayed in many other hotels in KK, and the quality has really varied from crappy and average to decent to good. Even though they charge a nominal fee for Internet usage, I was very happy with the quality and strength of signal that allowed me to conduct all my business on my computer. This was a welcome contrast to my previous KK hotel which had comfortable rooms but a weak wifi internet signal. I will be returning to Cititel on my next stay in Kota Kinabalu. It has the perfect mix of quality and value that businessmen seek when looking for a good mid-range hotel in terms of star value.

Room Tip: Nominal fee for WiFi Internet access but was well worth it because it was relatively reliable.
