The Palace Hotel is one of the older hotels in Kota Kinabalu. Located slightly away from the city centre, it is located near the Karamunsing area along a road leading up a hill. As a result it is next to rainforest, which is unique for a city hotel in Kota Kinabalu city. Although it is an older hotel, I believe it underwent a refurbishment a few years ago.

The hotel is curiously designed to look like a fort, hence perhaps its name of “Palace”. If you have a car at your disposal, the hotel has ample free parking space, compared to a city centre hotel. However if you do not have a car, it is a bit of a walk into the city; but you could always avail of GRAB or UBER services if you need to do so.

We stayed in an Executive Club Room, which is located on the 5th floor, which is the highest floor which has rooms (the banquet hall is on the 6th floor). Although it is called a Club Room, there are no actual club facilities on the Club floor to distinguish it from other the floors, at least when we were staying there.

The Executive Room that we got faced towards the open air carpark and Karamunsing. The room comes with flat screen television (limited channels), kettle, in-room safe, refrigerator, iron and ironing board. Wi-Fi is provided, we could connect sometimes but sometimes could not. The bathroom was clean and came with a shower cubicle. An A/C unit is located outside the window, so if you opened the window, it could be a bit noisy. We also thought the A/C could be cooler, it didn’t feel like 20 degrees Celsius, although indicated as such.

The hotel has a small swimming pool at the rear of the property facing the rainforest and a gymnasium. There is also a small garden and mini-walk as well. On the ground floor is the coffee house called the Tangerine, which is also where the buffet breakfast is served and also a Karaoke lounge and bar. There is also a small store selling snacks and a spa on the first floor. It is good that the hotel is also taking steps in going “green” by doing several environmental initiatives.

If you are looking for 4-star hotel which is not directly in the hustle and bustle of the city centre, you may want to consider this hotel.

Rooms were clean and quiet, wifi while not great in Malaysia at this time is terrible in this hotel in particular. Overall, the place feels dated and approaching a state of disrepair. The bar is dingy and dark, service not unfriendly but not friendly either. We moved to the Ch'aya some days after this and found for a similar price much more modern hotel, friendlier staff and nice pool, bar and restaurant. It is also slightly outside the city, but a similar distance as the palace.

Advantages: very nice hotel located close to both jungle and the city. Very friendlu staff, good meals, spa, ecological accent and nice garden. Disadvantages: far from city centre, sometimes problems with internet.

Hotel is clean and quiet, surrounding by a lot of tree. This is a non smoking hotel. Location is good for the traveler with the car, a lot of hotel car park lot. Feel safer and Don't have to park at public parking. 5minutes walk to Karamusing Shopping mall.
The room spacious and clean.
The breakfast are good, a lot of choice. They change the menu everyday, don't feel boring.
Only thing is no window for my room, but no complain with this kind of price.

For paying a fairly low price we were happy with the hotel. However, we stayed in the basement where the WiFi was basically non existing. They would not help us in any way when we raised this issue. The pool and gym was nice though and the hotel was clean in general.
