Damai Beach is set in an beautiful spot, jungle covered Mount Santubong one side, South China sea the other. If you are after a unique holiday then this is the place. Jungle treks, Orang-Utans, river safaris, exotic flora and fauna, even Crocodiles, this isn't Ibiza.
Our group of 4 very well travelled 30 somethings stayed in the Hilltop suites and Bidayuh Buruk huts. Both were fairly new and well kitted out. The Baruk would have to be 5 star accomodation, great views, jacuzzi, etc. The hilltop pool was lovely, clean and quiet.
This hotel understands what the usual international traveller wants and tries to fulfill it, albeit in a developing country. If you want 7 star perfection, ala Dubai, from a hotel, then you will be disappointed, don't bother. The whole place needs a freshen up on the maintenance side, but it is clean. The menu may be a bit boring if you have come to South East Asia for burger and chips - but why would you? The service may not be lightening, but the staff are friendly and always wear a smile.
(note: if you want a place to eat outside the hotel try the Palm Garden. Reception can call a free 5 minute shuttle to pick you up and drop you off after. It is set in a local fishing harbour, over looking the sea, but, don't be put off by the plastic plates and seats. This place serves only what can be described as the best Asian seafood we had ever tasted, bar none. In London this restaurant would cost you over £ 100 per person, here, with beer, £ 7.50. Worth travelling back for on its own.)

Stayed in 1 of the executive suites facing the South China Sea. Lovely view. Big room with adjoining sitting room and 2 queen beds. Service could be better.

Damai Beach Resort near Kutching, Sarawak, Borneo

We stayed in Damai Beach resort in June 2007. Our room was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. We had a buffet breakfast each day. It was of very good quality freshly cooked continental and local food included in the price of the room. The resort cafes and restaurants were inexpensive and the menu and quality of food was very good. The resort staff was fantastic; they went out of their way to satisfy our needs.

We took a number of day trips with CPH Travel, based in Kutching. Their guides picked us up at the resort and they were just tremendous, very knowledgeable, friendly and competent. We warmly recommend their services.

On some odd days when we stayed at the resort just relaxing we used the spa services, like massages, reflexology, hairdressing, etc. They were excellent and very affordable.

The shuttle service from the Resort to Kutching runs on regular bases all day, every day at minimal cost.

We have fond memories of the Damai Beach Resort holidays and hope our comment will help you with your planning of any future trips to Borneo.

Stayed here for 3 nights. The resort is very nice with a beutiful location more or less on the beach. The scenery is wonderful with the blue sea, golden beach and green hilly surroundings.

There is a nice restaurant on the site. The prices are reasonable and the selection is fine. Everything you eat and drink can be charged to your room bill, so you don´t have to walk around with a pile of money. Nice.

The standard rooms are nice and very spacious. Don´t expect pure luxury, but it´s clean and well equipped, however, they are a little dark.

If you have stayed in Kuching and are travelling from the city to the resort, it can be an advantage to take the shuttle bus from the "Holiday Inn" in city center. It´s about 10 RM per person, so if you´re a couple, it´s a very fair price to pay.

The resort is a bit remote and there are only a few very basic shops to choose from. If you have your budget in mind, I would suggest you buy your stuff in Kuching before you get to the resort. There is of course a fridge in the room.

Sit back and relax, it´s a very nice place.

We had travelled to Malaysia for a friends wedding and were never disappointed. The weather was very steamy however when the clouds cleared it showed the beautiful blue of the South China Sea. All the staff at Damai Beach were friendly and helpful at all times. The resort facilities made it very easy to feel like we had been away relaxing for weeks. Massages on the beach, fantastic breakfast buffet (also offered for lunch and dinner), and beautiful places to relax and spend time with friends. The resort offers a very cheap shuttle bus to the city of Kuching every 2 hours, 7 days. Very close to the rainforest walks and also the Sarawak Cultural village. The staff at Damai Beach were able to organise any additional tours we were after and most were offered at a lesser price than if booked direct. Our hilltop room was fantastic and very clean. The pool on the hilltop is very quiet and has a fbrilliant view over the cliff to the ocean. The main pool area was also great with a wet bar and quieter area to laze around. Cant wait to visit again!
