Damai Beach Resort was a bit of a disappointment, want to write something here just so fellow travellers are prewarned. We had a brief 2N/3D trip, and wouldn't recommend going for longer, unless there's something specific outside of the resort you are going for. Maybe hiking. But to be honest, there's nothing surrounding the resort. No small towns or villages to visit. One other resort is about all.

1st Day - The room selected was a Deluxe Seaview, which had a stench to it when we walked in, with some ants inside the closet. Kind of like a stench you get when you lock up a caravan in the heat for a few days, without airing it out. We got this changed to a better fresher smelling one a few doors down. Room facilities were ok. Air-Con, TV etc, had to get the phone fixed though, as that wasn't working when we walked in. Needed to call for the free on-site shuttle bus to pick us up all the time as it was a 10min walk to the main building with most of the restaurants, and reception area. 10min is not far, but you get sick of the same walk.

Decided to have a seafood meal that night. Recommend questioning the menu, as it was not totally clear on $/weight amount of fish, and we were caught with a higher bill than expected. Service ok. Food ok. Price wise, I have paid similar prices in Singapore for much the same. Though I didn't really expect Singapore prices there. They have the monopoly on the area, as there is nothing else around for competition.

2nd Day - Tried and failed to organize a trip for the day, hoping for snorkeling and dolphin watching, but would have had to pay double for the two of us, and they require a min. four people. Extra price not worth it 400Ringit, instead of 200, and no gauarantees of seeing dolphins. Other option was a night cruise watching fireflies, but that one was taken already by a private party. Apparently they are not really geared up for taking more groups, and considering the number of people that could possibly be there, that was pretty poor. Although, the resort at the time we went, even though being in peak season, was virtually dead.

Spent the day swimming in the beach and the pool, the pool was good, no issues there. The canoe hire was out of order for maintanence, so we hired a bike but could only go 300mtr one way along the beach, and 400mtr the other so that was a waste of time, but we did get our money back when asked, so not all bad. Mini golf run down, broken, and virtually unplayable. Hiking is probably the best thing you can do there, but I didn't bring the gear for it that trip.

That night we went for a swim at about sunset. Recommend paying attention to the Jellyfish warning flags (Green-Safe, Yellow-Warning, Red-High Risk, Don't swim). There was yellow flags up when we went, and other people were also swimming. Just as we were heading back, my girlfriend felt a sting near her elbow, and virtually straight away, got a line of inflamation ringing around her arm. We received help from one of the workers, a jellyfish home fix of lemons dipped in vinegar rubbed over the infected area, which after about an hour started to help. As a precaution though, considering we didn't know what colour the thing was (Red said the staff is highly venomous). we went for an evening 1-30min round trip to the closest A&E clinic, and they as a precaution injected anti-histamines. Otherwise she was not at any risk.

3Day - Girlfriend was much better, a little sore, and slightly red on the affected area, but otherwise good. We went for another swim, this time keeping it to the pool. Has our luch and after a bit of a Falulty Towers like mix up which I have to write about here...

Q(me) - Is this French Onion soup?
Waiter (Nods) - Yes.
Q(Me) - Are you sure, doesn't look like French onion soup, it's a bit creamy?
Waiter(dumb look) - Yes.
Girlfiend (To waiter) - What soup is that?
Waiter - Cream of mushroom.
Girlfiend (To waiter) - We wanted French onion
Waiter - Oh (and picks up plate and takes off).

Am I speaking the correct lingo? Maybe I need to speak more slowly..anyway I've been in Asia for 2 years now so should be expecting it. My fault...

Anyway, check the place out if you wish, it's nothing special. go for a pool swim and a hike, and if you hit the beach, read the warning signs. THEY DO GET JELLYFISH!

We stayed here for only a night as part of a leisure tour to Kuching. Check in was rather smooth although the reception was clearly understaffed (I was the only one checking in - or out - at that time, so it didn't matter).

Our room was HUGE, clean and comfortable, with facilities of every kind that you can imagine well equipped and ready to use. However, because of age the hotel seems to be losing a little bit of their luster. One of our windows in fact (I'm not going to say which room for obvious reason) had a broken lock, and we were for a while concerned about our belongings, especially considering the fact that there were no safety boxes in all rooms. Also, our cupboard had a dislodged sliding door, which was placed leaning against a shelf when we came in.

Breakfast was a spread and was included in our room rate of only 185 MYR. Included were Western foods, pastries, and some Asian dishes (nasi lemak, Chinese? buns etc). But be sure to go to the restaurant really early, cos the crowds start to stream in by about 8 am - and the guests were a little haphazard, no lines - everyone was just picking what they wanted quite randomly.

The view was of course spectacular, although I thought the sunsets at Damai weren't at all as pretty as the ones in Kota Kinabalu. The beach was fairly secluded, but the drawback was that the sea was also rather lifeless - I saw not a single fish, albeit warnings that cat and jelly-fishes may pose a danger to swimmers. At low tide, the basin quickly emptied out, and revealed a sand bar. It was quite surreal.

All in all, a good stay... A perfect place for some peace and "damai".

Stayed here three night as part of a tour. The staff were very helful and effecientWe tried al three restaurants and the food was excellent and very reasonably priced. Our room was enormous even for three of us. The beach was very good for going in the water lovely warm water and no jellyfish. There is also a beautiful quiet cliff top swimming pool as wel as the main pool. Sit here look at the view and watch the huge butterflies fly with a dink in your hand. The Sarawak Cultural Village is an easy walk away and well worth a visit We also did the evening boat trip and saw probiscus monkeys, macaques, irawaddy dolphins and amazing fireflies.I would definately go back.

My family of 4 (2 adults & 2 children) stayed at one of the chalets here for 2 nights last week. I must say, stepping into this hotel was like going back into time. Everything looked old and felt dull. Even the sun deck chairs by the pool side looked like something from the 70s, maybe even further back in time. Our chalet though spacious with 2 queen size beds, was dark, outdated and creepy. Certain parts of the hotel especially the poolside area, gym, restaurants and recreation areas seemed to be in a state of decay. We tried all the restaurants in the hotel. Unfortunately, all were very disappointing. Service was slow, the food served looked uninteresting and was pretty much tasteless.

The place seems to cater more to local guests rather than foreign ones. Most of the foreigners staying there were senior citizens. The hotel should have strict rules that prohibits people without proper swimwear to use the pools. When we were there, we could see many of the guests (local Malaysians) dipping in the pools with their jeans, track suits and t-shirts on. It was so improper & unhygienic.

It's such a pity as this place with it's beautiful beach and stunning views of the mountains actually has lots of potential to be a great resort.

My husband and I arrived at the resort on 25th of February 2009.

Damai Beach Resort has the perfect setting for total relaxation and rejuvenation. It has has a warm, ethnic feel about it. The beach is clean and all facilities are well maintained. It also has a good choice of food variety for the guests, with the main restaurant serving internation food, the Fishermen's Catch with seafood and the Treez serving Malaysian cuisine. The resort organizes themed dinners such as the Headhunters' Night every Thursday, with exciting performances and great BBQ dinners.
While we were there, we had a chance to take part in some of its night activities such as Senam Tari and Poco Poco dance sesiions, night walks etc. - it was such great fun!

We stayed in a chalet room, which was ethnically designed, cozy and very comfortable. What really made a big difference (compared with all the other hotels we visited in Malaysia during our 3months trip) was its staff, their sincerity in service and hospitality - we felt that we have come home.

We enjoyed our stay very much - time was too short though we spent there 24 days! Damai Beach is a place for nature fans - as we are - we went on jungle trecking several times and discovered for us a lot of interesting plants and animals. But even in the garden of Damai Beach Resort you can see sunbirds, pacific swallows, bulbuls, magpie robins, langurs and lizards and a lot of beatiful butterflies. The Hilltop pool where we went for swimming every day -is the most wonderful pool we ever had, from there we had a breath taking view on the sea and the Mont Santubong.
We will go back there - the resort grows on you!
