“Regretful Holiday”
Reviewed 14 May 2012

Reservation not found!! Even numerous attempt to reserved the chalet and the reservation staff told us they have ample of rooms available and just come!! We don't think this is right so we decided to just go on the actual day and found out that we been stopped by the security guard. So, we insist to see the receptionist and straight deal with them and last they found our booking and told us that their mistake for not giving us the reservation number. So? what do you guys think?? Poor management?? is it?

A group of 5 peoples stayed in one of the family chalet and the standard beyond unbelievable. Room bad musty smells, Bedsheets, Pillowcases, mattress, pillow, towel all are extremely unpleasant smell. The extra mattress just kept below the bed uncovered and it was filthy with obvious stains and dusts.
Bathroom no hot water to showered even we have individual water heater installed in the shower room.
The security was poorly maintained. Some windows the locking system faulty and obviously no attempt to rectify the in room security system. The balcony floor dirty with dead leaves and cobweb along the wooden divider. I had to do the sweeping before actually relax sitting down on the stool at the balcony.
So bad can't sleep well as the bad musty smell extremely strong that took control over my sensitive nose.
Having lunch at the cafe, the fruit salad unbelievable substandard served!! How could a fruit salad with whitish creamy topping on top? We dislike the fruit salad and the burger fries totally oily and unacceptable standard of foods in terms of quality.

Need serious improvement in all area and this will be our first and the last of our stay in this so call Permai Rainforest Resort!!

We stayed in a tree house. At night we opened up all the windows (the screens kept the mossies out) and slept in the jungle air. The sounds of the jungle at night were quite noisy. But it was cool enough to sleep, lovely for us as we live in Singapore and use aircon every night!
The cafe was a nice setting, the food was awesome. There were no ants at any table we sat at, but did notice some around some spilled juice at another table. The battle with ants can never be won, and given that is was an outdoor restaurant in the middle of the jungle it was ok.
We saw monkeys from out treehouse verandah. We went to the cultural village which was within walking distance, food there was great and the performance in the theatre excellent.
It was relaxing to be in the jungle and 3 days was enough to unwind and relax, any more and you might get bored. The mountain was an amazing sight and the area very pretty.
The jungle pool was cool and no pool chairs.

Stayed here for 2night.. Ernm lucky only two nights. Nothing much u can do here as u you are now experiencing jungle life. I would recommend the tree house.. As the other cabins n accomodations looked really unmaintained. The tree house was the reason i stayed at permai. From tree house.. U can see the beach.. And beach is only walking distance away. At night.. The sound of crickets and waves.. Were just soooo relaxing.. I had my best sleep ever. If u would like to come permai.. Pls book the tree house for privacy and all the tree house are located at fronts side of the jungle trails. In term of foods.. Well, you hv no choice left, only one coffee house serving foods and since it was the only restaurant there.. Service was kinda slow.. As everyone jam packed at the same place. Taste were so-so too. To get more foods, we walked to the food centre located just before the entrance of permai and it will takes u like 15minutes to reach there. There is a chinese restaurant that serves delicious foods there. There are also some small stalls selling local foods. Do bring torch light along if u walk at night bcos the place is not lighted on most areas. I remembered walking back to permai in dark.. So eerie.. Hehe. By the way.. Maximum stay.. 2nights should be ok.. More than that.. I bet u will be bored to death.

Based on Tripadvisor feedback, we were quite apprehensive about the Permai Rainforest Resort, but...it exceeded all expectations,
We travelled as a family of 5 with 2 young children, and we occupied 2 treetop houses (number 5 and 6). Contrary to previous reviews, we found the tree houses Excellent. They are beatifully laid out, spacious, airconditioned, clean, and with the best location and views in the world. They are really right in the tree tops.

We also found the rest of the resort quite good. We had breakfast and dined in the Rainforest cafe for 3 days, and the food was good, although service was quite erratic.

In terms of other facilities, the jungle pool is a real winner. The clear, clean water really refreshed and is fantastic for the kids to cool down and splash around.
The 2 beaches were OK, not stunning.

We also went on a tour organised by the resort (Bako National Park) which was organised very well. the boatsman knew all the gorgeous places to swim and picnic, and the food provided was really good. All in all a lovely day out.

Last but not least, we used the hotel transportation from Kuching airport. We were met promptly at the airport, and had a nice airconditioned drive to the resort.

So, this resort is a lot better than we expected. Lovely days in Sarawak!

Room Tip: Tree house is the only way to go

My other half and I stayed here for 2 nights in mid-March and overall I'd say our stay was PERFECT! (wouldn't say this lightly)

The treehouse we stayed in was just lovely, very clean and so different (that's why we booked this unique sort of place for the weekend). It was such an experience to stay so near to all the wildlife and the beach is within 5 min walk.

Lovely beach - not THAT busy and the resort also offered activities - e.g. kayaking? Although we didn't take part in any of these extra activities - we didn't think we had time.

The resort is about 45mins drive from Kuching and about an hour's drive from Sepongeh (??) the Orangutan Sanctuary - you can ask for a transfer to here, at reception. Not a transfer bad price for the experience you'll have seeing the Orangutans! (there is a small fee to pay to go into the Sanctuary but again this is well worth it).
GOOD TIP - feeding time at the Sanctuary is 9am or 3pm (I think) and we went to the 9am feeding. It was very exciting, we saw 4 adult Orangutans and 1 baby!! We were told this was good (lucky) because sometimes you can visit and not see any?!!

We had quite a few meals (and drinks!) at the restaurant on site - The Rainforest Cafe - and the food was (like everything else) great. Very tasty and very cheap! Even when we had to leave early in the mornings (to go to the Orangutan place, or to go back to the airport) we just asked about taking a sandwich or something with us and this was organised very quickly, in a lunch box.

The staff were ALWAYS at hand to help. We even had the Resort Manager (I think he was) come over to us one evening at dinner and ask us how our stay was going and if there was anything he could do to make it better. We simply had nothing to complain about - everything was great! :)

Would definitely recommend the Permai Rainforest Resort to anyone who wants somewhere different; somewhere unique.

Room Tip: We stayed in a TreeHouse and they were lovely for a couple... we had Treehouse number 2 -was fine (n...

My wife and I checked in for a week's stay with our two children and had one of the best experiences of our lives. From the moment we checked in the staff were friendly and eager to please. Hans, the manager was polite, friendly and professional and helped us to find the cabin that was most suitable for our family. The rooms are basic - no television or internet - but comfortable with aircon (which we never turned on) and fans and plenty of hot water for the shower. This is the perfect jungle escape. Hans is constantly on patrol to make sure the guests are comfortable and manages the staff very effectively - I am used to traveling in Malaysia and do not like the sight of litter, but the resort is immaculately cleaned of trash and the beach is absolutely gorgeous. In fact there are two beaches, one with a cool river that runs into the sea and the other, more private beach surrounded by the forest where we swam and watched the sunset. There is a two hour hike from your cabin (within the resort) which leads to a spectacular 30 foot high waterfall where you can swim and watch the tiny frogs climbing against the torrent. Speaking of wildlife - the kids were utterly fascinated by the diversity of birds, butterflies, dragonflies, insects, you name it - that inhabit the resort. I saw my first fireflies. The breakfast was fine, with brown bread and coffee, plus the usual eggs and noodles etc. For lunch we made the fifteen minute walk to the nearby excellent food court, and then we enjoyed dinner at the resort in the evening. One small gripe is the cost of the red wine which is far too high. RM150 is just too much. It should be more like RM 80. The waiting staff are super friendly with lots of smiles and time for conversation.
I cannot recommend this place highly enough. There is a swimming pool that comes from the river - fresh, unchlorinated water straight from the forest floor, you can watch the dragonflies buzzing over the surface as you swim, surrounded by the jungle. You are far from TV, Internet, the news, any concerns of modern life. We will return!

Overall Permai was a great place to stay because it's built into the rainforest. They didn't clear out an area and build houses; all of the rooms are about as close to nature as possible. We saw monkeys in the trees by the front desk both days and a hand-sized spider outside our front door one day. Hello nature.

We stayed in a treehouse one night and in a cabin the second. The treehouse was a rare experience - 30 ft up, no insects, and the sound of ocean waves + breeze all night long. It's not a big room, but we didn't spend much time inside. I'd stay there again. From a kayak, only 2 of the 10 treehouses are visible which shows how well the place is built into the surroundings.

The cabin was a bit more bland. It had space for 6, with a communal shower and 6 one-person beds. A bit dirtier, but no insects inside the room.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. We went to a seafood restaurant in the local village which was a good experience. Seafood was good, seasonal ferns were excellent.

Room Tip: For 2 people (with 1 child), choose a treehouse.
