“Very poor experience of La Pirogue - won't be returning ever again!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 January 2012

I'm sorry to be difficult here - but I expect so much more from a resort than the experience me and my family had recently. I admit that La Pirogue is a most beautiful setting, and the pool makes the visit worthwhile on its own. But we encountered three irreconcilable issues in December, and we won't be visiting again. From the pedantic to serious. 1. The management are rigid, and staff have no ability to accommodate the needs of guests. This is evidenced in the inflexible timing of meals, the inability to move an umbrella at the pool and a general lack of comprehension about what hospitality actually means. 2. The food was not always fresh. The fact that food poisoning broke out in the last few days there is perhaps just very unlucky. My son spent the flight back wretching his insides out. Friends we made there had similar gastro- poisoning. Again, maybe we were all just particularly unlucky. But when you see the sausages appear under a grill for supper, then appear in slided form for lunch the next day on a bed of lettuce, and then in a mixed salad the next night you have to wonder. Lastly, 3. This is either a family resort or a business function venue - it cannot comfortably be both. La Pirogue hosted an external bankers function one night. 850 people were invited along with a live band. The music went on past midnight. The tent was erected literally 20 m from the north side of the resort chalets (picture below). A few hundred of us could not relax or sleep that night. And no, guests at the hotel were not invited to party the night away. The tent took 2 days to erect. The hammering went on into the nights prior to the function. WTF!?! This is totally unacceptable - and clearly the management are out for profit, rather than looking out for the best interests if their guests. I understand that these events are fairly regular occurences there. My advice - vote with your wallet. I note in concluding that this is not a cheap holiday, and one should expect more from a resort such as this. Fortunately, there is better value elsewhere on the island.

Room Tip: Away from the beach - this is where the external functions are regularly hosted. "But hey?&quo...

I have been to this resort about 10 time I'd say, when I was younger my father took part in the world marlin fishing competition and me and my family and my dads team mates families all stayed at this hotel, they helped with promoting my dads fishing team, they are truly amazing, and the cocktails are to die for!! The huts are so cute, and it's easy access to all other hotels that are welcoming. It is brilliant, will defiantly be going back there one day!!

We have just returned from a 10 night trip to La Pirogue with our 2 teen daughters and their 2 friends. It is the 4th time we have stayed at this resort, and it was as good as it has always been. Many of the staff have been at the hotel for 10 years or more, and most remember us from before. The staff also went out of their way to accommodate our room requests which we made prior to our arrival.

What we really enjoy about the hotel are the fantastic sunset views as the hotel is on the West coast, and the bungalows which are scattered around the wonderfully manicured gardens. You never feel as if you are on top of anybody else. Each visitor has their own piece of paradise! The rooms are more than adequate, especially as not much time is spent in them. There is A/C and ceiling fans to keep you cool, and the bathroom has a separate shower and bath. The rooms are cleaned twice a day.

We stayed on HB as we do not consume enough alcohol to warrant being on FB. The price of the drinks, even water and cooldrinks, and the lunches is high (especially when converting back to SA Rands) and we did suggest on their customer satisfaction questionnaire that perhaps there could be reduced rates for SADC residents. One way round these steep prices is to purchase drinks at the nearby supermarket (up to 7 times cheaper than in the hotel - Rs125 for a glass of Coke in the hotel and Rs20 for a 500ml Coke in the supermarket!) The buffet at Thatches offers something for everyone's tastes at breakfast and dinner. Our waiter, Parbooram (sp?), was, as always, fantastic.

Our biggest disappointment this visit was to find out that waterskiing is no longer a free option. Apparently this changed on 1 November 2011. It is now really expensive and I hardly noticed anyone going out to ski. We did still snorkel, windsurf, kayak and sail, which are all included, and the children went on the Banana and did Parasailing at a reduced rate through the Teen Club.

We celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary the day before we arrived at La Pirogue, and we were treated to an amazing complimentary seafood dinner at Paul and Virginie Seafood Restaurant on one of our evenings there. Thanks to all responsible for this, mainly Shirley - we even received a personalised menu and chocolate cake!!

We visited Grand Baie one day after not visiting that part of the island for a number of years and were very pleased that we were not staying near there. It has become disappointingly commercialized in our opinion, and not a traditional Mauritian experience.

We would not hesitate to recommend La Pirogue and the area around Flic-en-Flac for a fantastic holiday in Paradise!

Room Tip: Do not think it is worth the extra money to have a Superior Room, the Standard Rooms are just as goo...

We have stayed at different hotels in Mauritius when visiting my husband's family but this hotel was simply wonderful - very relaxed - very clean - welcoming and the staff to this hotel are the true back bone - without them this hotel would not exhist that is for sure.

The welcome on arrival was simply amazing and as my husband dives he found Gerald Rambert and Jean Marc the diving instructors first class - highly professional.

We also played tennis and the tennis coach was superb - best tennis coach we have ever had!

The spa and gymn are excellent first class with an excellent trainer.

We went all inclusive which was the best way to go - no large bill at the end of our vacation and we could also use all the facilities of the sister hotel close by i.e. Sugar Beach and their restaurants as well so we were very very spoilt for choice.

All the food in both hotels were outstanding. If travelling as a family there are excellent facilities for children with highly trained staff to look after them both day and night - so that can give the parents a well deserved break - our daughter is all grown up but we could see how well they were looked after - wonderful private children's club in operation.

Flic en Flac is fantastic for its weather and beaches being on the west part of the island and just out of the hotel are amenities from internet cafe to banks, shops, pharmacy, bars and restaurants - all within walking distance.

The following is my husband's observation of the island where he originates from - he can now see that there is an imbalance of vast tourism on the island now with the sugar cane fields almost all gone made way to developers - a sign of modern times which is sad - of course tourism brings in much needed jobs to the island and revenue as well but nevertheless compared to Seychelles there is now a huge imbalance - so where does it stop? not sure about that one.

It is a pity that they did not pay more attention to the island as Seychelles as they seem to have the ECO balance correct - perhaps that is why Seychelles is 3 times more expensive to visit - we have also visited Seychelles and honestly preferred it but everyone is different.

It was a joy to see my husband's family and to talk with them about the island and their views etc.

We had a wonderful waitress at the Pizza cafe nearby the pool and she really did have a sparkling diamond on her front tooth but alas we cannot remember her name but yes she was the waitress with the diamond smile that was for sure.

We cannot fault the hotel in any way and ALL THE STAFF were simply so kind and amazing - thank you so very much and when we do return which will be in February 2011 we will certainly pop in to see the staff as this time we will be staying with our family in another part of the island.

Incidentally both hotels i.e. La Pirogue and Sugar Beach DO CATER FOR ALL PERSONAL DIETS so if you require a special diet or have any allergies to certain types of food do let the hotel know well in advance and they will accommodate to your requirements that also includes children as well.

It is interesting to note that on these reviews of La Pirogue and Sugar Beach they come out very well indeed but when checking on the Mauritius Forum unfortunately some of their regular contributors keep advising for travellers to use other hotels instead of La Pirogue which I think is not fair or right at all.

However this is my own personal opinion.

All the very best to future travellers who may or are thinking of booking this wonderful peace of heaven such as La Pirogue.

Kind Regards
Caroline and Timothy Collen

We stayed at the La Pirogue in November 2011. The hotel is excellent and the gardens are beautiful! There are palm trees everywhere and it feels like paradise being there!
We got married in the gazebo, which was again perfect and very private. Our wedding coordinator, from guest relations, was the most amazing and helpful person..Her name is Shirley, please say hello from neil and katie if you stay there.
Unfortunately I was ill on my wedding day but the staff was so helpful and got me through it. We could not have chosen a better location to get married.
The food was good, good choice for breakfast and dinner. However we found it very difficult to book a table at Citronellas, which is at Sugar Beach. We ate at The Tides, but it was not that good, we preferred Paul and Virginie. The staff were friendlier and more approachable than at Sugar Beach. I think because Sugar Beach is 5 star...
The beach was nice and there were plenty of sun loungers, but you need to secure the ones around the pool at breakfast time.
We stayed all inclusive and we glad we did. There were plenty of food and drinks to choose from. If you go for the sea food bbq, which is on the beach, then you will have to pay a supplement.
I could go on for much longer about how brilliant and beautiful this hotel is, and how professional yet friendly the staff is, but I will run out of space.
I would highly recommend it and we definately will be returning to renew our vows.
Before I forget, we had 6 geckos in our room, all on the ceiling. they come in during the day but they leave at night to feed. They are harmless and eat all the mosquitos!! Also keep your door shut at all times and use A/C as there are some mice running around at night. We saw two, but it is all natural because of the huge garden.

Room Tip: We stayed at 148, which was a standard room and was really nice and good location. Then we went to 3...

This hotel is exactly what all the others are saying. Everything was perfect even the grass was manicured to perfection. Spent most of the time at the dive centre "Skydivers" All the team there were so helpful and very friendly. Gerald Rambert & Jean Marc (dive instructors) so enthusiastic. Dives were reasonably priced considering they were based in La Pirogue. I got caught out (only once though) double gin & tonic £17.00 they used Gordons but i didn't know until i got the bill, so be careful.
We hired a car, you must try and do this as there are some wonderful places to visit (but make sure you do wear your seat belt as the driving IS manic. Le Chamarel Restuarant is a wonderful place to dine with the most amazing views, closes at 3pm every day as the road back down when dark could be dangerous, food fantastic, try the fish vindaye. Also when there try and visit the coloured earth and see the giant turtles. Also the Rum tasting..
Le Morne another beautiful beach not too far from Chamarel. On the way from Chamarel back to hotel "London Way" supermarket on right hand side is handy to stock up on beer, wine etc have quite a lot of offers. Oh and just before you get there you should visit La Preneuse beach on left hand side just before London Way, this beach is mostly quiet, gorgeous. Big Willy's is good for a beer as it's on way back to hotel, in Tamarin left hand side before the bridge.Make sure you have your driving licence with you when you go out in car, we got stopped by police, just a routine stop, showed licence, all fine. Casela was ok, bit noisy with all the birds, has a very good restaurant with another amazing view, and make sure you grab a freebie rum taster, Pink Pigeon, not bad. In Flic en Flac, Sea Breeze, Chez Pepe & Al Youn all fab restaurants.
We dined these a few times. Have the Magic Bowl in Al Youn, Mmm and reasonably priced.
Money exchange, come out of hotel, turn left then first right we got 44 rate.
Nice airport but expensive so get your gifts elsewhere.
Can't wait to go back. Oh forgot to say, the sunsets are AMAZING.
