Tough hike, started at midnight, took a few breaks, got to top around sunrise, PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MURDERED on this hike and others so it is a must TO HAVE A GUIDE, I am in my 30's 6' 1" 200lbs and I hired a guide, but you can always gamble your life away ;)

We had the pleasure of visiting this park with a guide. Unless you're an experienced hiker, riding part way up the volcano with a guide is the way to go. And go you must!

We took Jeep tour from Volcan Baru 4x4 to the top of Volcán Barú as it is hard to climb it during the night. Our driver Antonio is a excellent driver to drive on this most difficult road to drive in the world ( We believe so, I don't believe anywhere else would allow to drive on the condition like this). It took 2hrs to drive to the top. When we got there, it was cloudy at the beginning, however, it became clear about half hour later. The sunrise is amazing and the fact that you can see both oceans makes it unique experience. Most people come to here by hiking and it is great experience, the Jeep tour is another option if it is hard for you to climb it.

You should prepare well before climb it:

- Check mountain-forecast.com on volcán baru to make sure it is clear, otherwise, it will be difficult to climbing and will be no view
- Bring good hiking boots with hiking poles, we met two students hiking without poles and injured the knee and came down with Jeep with us.
- Bring warm clothing and water with snack
- Mentally prepare yourself for at least a 12 hour hike and mentally prepared to ride on very bumpy road.

This is a beautiful area. If you have the chance, I recommend hiking up here. We started here and hiked the Quetzal Trail to Boquete. It is worth getting a guide just for the knowledge of the land that they will have. We booked through Hello Travel Panama. Alejandro was great, as was his assistant Tom! The scenery is beautiful. Lots of flowers, waterfalls, and incredible views. It is a cloud forest so it can be misty or rainy. Luckily for us it was mostly sunny!

I dont have much experience with climbing vulcanoes and i heard from people with experience in Guatemala that Volcán Barú is more a second best option, but the hike itself is a great challenge. In less than 12hrs you walk 27km and incline 2km. The sunrise is amazing and the fact that you can see both oceans makes it special. Along the route you can see several birds including the hummingbird. It is not necessary to book a tour. Hostel Mamallena offers a oneway shuttle service for 5 dollars and a board where tourists can group up themselves
