It is very big in comparison with St Basil's cathedral. Good location also if you are on the way to cross the pedestrian bridge.

On a visit to Moscow in 2003 we made regular visits to a small Orthodox Church on the edge of Red Square – it may in fact have been the one that remained open all during the communist era of the Soviet Union. The many joys included the intimacy of the congregation, the wonderfully deep sense of spirituality and the choral repertoire including the haunting Rachmaninov's Vespers (or the 'All-Night Vigil') by the Russian orthodox priests and choir.

The vast majority of Russian Orthodox Church congregation are justifiably proud that this current Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was rebuilt on its original site during 1995–2000; the original church, built back in the 19th century, was destroyed on the order of Soviet leader, Stalin, in 1931. It is the tallest Orthodox Church in the world, and has a gleaming white and gold exterior.

During a more recent visit our hosts insisted on a visit to the Cathedral. It feels almost heretical to say that the current church has now developed the aura of reverence that we found in the little Orthodox Church on the edge of Red Square. It just seems too vast - even with a congregation of over 3,000, the church appears only half full. There is not the same intimacy or immediacy. Was it Dostoyevsky who wrote that “Old Churches are better for praying”.

Simple as that, this temple is a must see for all visiting Moscow. It is an orthodox masterpiece with great showcase of orthodox art, paintings and handwork.
